Great Ideas for Level 2 Travel in the Western Cape

As South Africa tentatively progresses to lower levels – including Level 2 as of 18 August 2020 – I realise that people are desperate to get out more and most especially, to support our local businesses and industries.

And we really need to. Yet, at the same time, we need to ensure we do so safely and carefully, so that we do not end up reverting back to a stricter level, like Level 3, 4 or even worse, 5…

Sharing is Caring

These past few months, I have been actively sharing as much travel and hospitality news as I can on my blog and social feeds. Mainly to support businesses – but also to assist my readers in these trying times.

I have recently found that my Instagram is becoming an easier platform for providing daily news and updates. It’s just easier for me to spend ten minutes researching and writing an Instagram post than it is to continually update my blog.

The problem in this is, not everyone follows me on Instagram. So many of my readers may be missing out.

Now that we are in Level 2, I have decided I will update this post with as much news as I can – sourced from my Instagram. 🙂

Should you wish to see my daily updates first, it is best to follow me on Instagram. I plan a few days in advance wherever I can and try to post each day.

But if you can’t, know that I will do my best to keep this page updated with safe travel and food ideas.

Inter-provincial Travel – and Past Blog Resources

Now that inter-provincial travel, tourism and wine sales are back on the cards, I am also linking to some of my older posts. Mainly so that you can read more about the experience(s) I have had at each featured location, wine estate or business.

Please just understand, however, that this does not mean all activities and experiences are open once more. I am simply providing more insight and resources on the places for your current and/or future travel needs.

If you would like to find out more information, it is best to contact each restaurant, wine estate and venue directly. There is only so much I can provide updates on and sadly, I cannot constantly update blog posts.

Safe Food and Wine and Travel Ideas Opening Up Under Level 2

Below are some of the places I have recently posted about on Instagram. I will do my best to keep sourcing more each day.

Aside from the information I shared on my feed, I have also linked to past posts I have written on these places (for added resources) and the necessary contact details.

1) The Country Kitchen at Mont Rochelle Re-Opens (Franschhoek)

In addition to the re-opening of The Country Kitchen, Mont Rochelle Hotel and Vineyard is also re-opening in August, with strict health and safety measures in place.

I am pleased to share that @montrochellewine has informed me that their beautiful restaurant, The Country Kitchen, will be reopening on Saturday, 1 August. Mont Rochelle is one of my favourite Franschhoek estates so I definitely recommend a visit! 🙂 . With its breathtaking views of the Franschhoek valley and their delightful outdoor seating options, this is the perfect spot to enjoy a winelands meal, as we inch closer to spring. . The team has carefully prepped everything to ensure all necessary health and safety protocols are in place. Social distancing and more cautious food presentation measures are just some of the COVID-19 regulations they have introduced. . As of 1 August, The Country Kitchen will be open every Saturday and Sunday and on public holidays between 11:00 am – 16:00 pm (last seating at 16:00 pm). . Join them for a delicious a la carte menu, with the added option of a two- or three-course meal. For families, there is also a children’s menu and new jungle gym for little ones to enjoy. . They can’t sell alcohol at this time but you can choose between some delicious mocktails and other non-alcoholic options, soft drinks and hot beverages. . Visit The Country Kitchen for a tasty meal and then take a stroll about the estate’s pretty, spacious grounds… Social distancing is a breeze here! . To book, please contact The Country Kitchen directly on: +27 (021) 876 2770 or email countrykitchen@montrochelle.virgin.com. . Also, find them on my Safe Day Trips near CT in Level 3 post – link in bio. 🌄

3) Visit the West Coast National Park During Flower Season 2020 (West Coast)

View this post on Instagram

Great news for all the flower lovers in the Western Cape! 🏵️🌼🌸 . SANParks has released a statement saying that the Postberg section of the West Coast National – famed for its wildflowers – will be open to the public for its annual flower season from now until end September 2020. 🌄 . Update: In addition to self-drives, SANParks has opened the Park to cyclists and hikers at this time. . Please adhere to the rules for the safety of yourself, the staff and those around you. . Gate entry times in effect as of 4 August are Monday – Sunday, 10:00 am – 16:00 pm. Last entry at 15:00 pm. . Strict COVID-19 protocols will be in place from entry and only the Langebaan entrance will be operating. 😷 . So bundle the family into the car for a trip up the West Coast and enjoy a scenic flower-spotting drive! . Last year we went in early September and these photos were the result. But, in hindsight, I think it is actually better to try go in August when the wildflowers are at their peak for the season – but we still saw an incredible floral show last time. 🙂 . And don’t think self-driving means you will miss out – most of my photos were taken from the car as we drove. 🌷🌸🏵️🌻🌼💮🌺

For anyone craving a romantic or relaxing winelands getaway in Wellington, Dunstone Country Estate is ideal. 🏘️ . Social distance in peace and luxury at this beautiful farm, which offers four gorgeous cottages to choose from. . Pictured here is the Guava Cottage, which we stayed in a few summers ago. It is a stunning two-bedroom, two-bathroom cottage, complete with its own braai area, pool, spacious lounge and beautifully apppointed kitchen… Oh and did I mention the views are dreamy too? 🌄 . It remains one of my most special, romantic accommodation finds to date. . Best of all, it is both child- and pet-friendly, making it ideal for a couple or family to enjoy. 🐱🐶👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 . Find out more or book online at: www.dunstone.co.za. Or have a browse on my blog to read the accommodation review I wrote on Guava Cottage a while back. 🙂

5) Open Air Game Drives at Thali Thali Game Lodge (West Coast)

View this post on Instagram

Thali Thali Game Lodge, situated along the Cape West Coast, near Langebaan, is an incredible, family-run game farm. It is also the perfect place to escape back to nature and soothe your soul. . Best of all, they offer amazing guided game drives (open air vehicles, so ventilation is not an issue in these times 😷), incredible hospitality and an all-round wonderful West Coast experience. . If you are heading up the West Coast to see the flowers – why not pop in and enjoy an awesome game drive at Thali Thali? You won’t regret it. . Thali Thali will always remain one of my favourite spots in the West Coast… I can’t wait to revisit them again someday – I think you can see why. 🌄🦒

7) Explore the Elgin Railway Market (Elgin)

View this post on Instagram

Great news for all market lovers and weekend shoppers! Since July, Elgin Railway Market has reopened its doors over weekends. 🥙🥘🍝🍺 . Although sadly the beloved steam train is missing for the time being, you can still enjoy visiting this oh-so-cool, steampunk-inspired market. 🚞 . This is honestly one of my favourite markets in the Western Cape and I definitely love it’s interesting, fun and above all, family-friendly atmosphere. I love it a little bit more each time I visit and it makes my inner market lover very happy. 🖼️ . With safety measures and masks in places, guests can browse the awesome selection of market stalls and goods, enjoy the fresh country air and spend a day away from the city. Win-win on all fronts, I’d say. 🙂 . Note: This is primarily an indoor market, however, it is a pretty spacious, airy venue and there are plenty of outdoor sections to explore (if you are afraid to be cooped up indoors for too long). Please also remember to wear your masks. 😷 . According to their Facebook page, they are currently trading from 9:00 am – 17:00 pm every Saturday and Sunday.

8) Enjoy a Wine Tasting or Open Air Game Drive at Villiera Wines (Stellenbosch)

View this post on Instagram

Great news for wine lovers and nature adventurers (or both, if you are like me): The lovely Villiera Wines in Stellenbosch is open again for wine sales, collections, tastings and deliveries – and for their amazing, open air game drives, too! . From Monday to Thursday, you can collect or buy your wine at the estate from 09:00 am – 17:00 pm – or, if you can’t visit, have your orders delivered. They have every health and safety protocol in place. 😷 . On Fridays, while you can still visit the estate for tastings – wine sales are not permitted, as per government regulations. . Best of all, because they are offering game drives again from Monday to Friday (they are currently closed on Saturdays and public holidays for the time being), you can book a game drive and enjoy a wine tasting if you plan it right and visit between Monday – Friday. Bookings are required for all game drives. . I love this Stellenbosch estate and they make the most incredible MCC in case you want to pop the cork and celebrate a special occasion, engagement or lockdown birthday now. 🍾 . Plus, their game drives are incredible – plenty of exciting game to see, including an adorable giraffe family who I love. 🙂🦒 . Check out my blog for my past review and experiences at Villiera Wines.

9) Drive-through Wine Sales and Delicious Deli at Durbanville Hills (Durbanville)

View this post on Instagram

One of my favourite Durbanville wine estates, Durbanville Hills, is open for both drive-through wine sales and for their new, delicious-looking deli. . I have not yet visited the deli (although it looks amazing) but I can attest to their excellent wines. . If you would like to make use of the drive-through, you can do so on Monday – Thursday, from 09:00 am – 17:00 pm. . Simply drive in, follow the signs and you can then place your order and pay from the safety of your car… Thereafter, your wines will be loaded by the team into your boot for your safe enjoyment. 🍷 . As for the deli, it seems it is open from Tuesday – Sunday, from 10:00 am – 17:00 pm and offers a delicious array of goodies, like moreish pastries and snacks, thought up by Chef Desiree Ann Palmer. . All necessary health and safety measures are in place at the deli, including frequent sanitisation, screening and temperature checks upon your entry and exit and social distancing while browsing. . So go on, spoil yourself and enjoy the gorgeous views from this fine estate while you are at it. 🙂🌄

10) Lunch or Deliveries from La Paris Bistro

View this post on Instagram

One of my favourite bistros in Franschhoek is the lovely La Paris Bistro. . Found on the immaculate La Paris Estate – itself a famous wedding and function venue – it offers stylish seating, incredible food, good coffee, deli products and the most delicious-looking cakes and much more. 🍔🍰🥧☕ . They re-opened in July and are trading from Wednesday – Sunday, 09:00 am – 17:00 pm. To secure your spot, make a booking via Dineplan (visit www.laparis.co.za) or contact them on (021) 867 0171. . And, in addition to their sit-down meals, you can now also order takeaway meals that are available for pickup, from 16:30 pm – 17:30 pm, Wednesday to Saturday. To order, please visit www.laparis.co.za. . Best of all, for all prospective brides out there, La Paris Estate is an absolutely stunning wedding venue. Definitely one of my top three, I think – I fell in love with it during my visit. 😍 . If you would like to read more about their wedding offerings and facilities, please see my ‘Best Wedding Venues for Travellers in the Cape Winelands’ post on the blog. Link in bio. 👰 . So if you want to enjoy a delicious meal in Franschhoek or scout for your future dream wedding venue, La Paris Estate and Bistro have you sorted… 😉

11) Booked Wine Tastings at De Grendel

View this post on Instagram

Yesterday, driving through the Durbanville winelands, I was again reminded of how popular the wine farms in this unique region are. It was really busy all over! . And happily, De Grendel, one of my favourite Durbanville wine estates is back, open to wine lovers once again as of yesterday 22 August… This means their tasting room and lounge is open for both wine sales and tastings. . For wine sales (off-site consumption), De Grendel can assist you from Monday to Thursday, 09:00 am – 17:00 pm. 🍷 . For wine tastings, you can visit from Wednesday to Saturday, 09:00 am – 17:00 pm and on Sundays from 10:00 am – 16:00 pm. They are closed to wine tastings on Mondays and Tuesdays. . However, due to limited seating and social distancing measures, tasting bookings are essential. No booking = no wine tasting. . Booking slots are as follows: 09:00am 09:45am 11:00am 11:45 am 13:00 pm 13:45 pm 15:00 pm 15:45 pm. . To book and secure your tasting slot, please comtact De Grendel directly at melissa@degrendel.co.za. . During lockdown, De Grendel (as De Grendel does) also found inventive ways to keep their staff and customers at the estate… If you haven’t yet heard about the amazing picnics they have been hosting in recent weeks – you have been missing out. I hope the picnics will be a trend they continue with because that lawn overlooking Table Mountain is made for picnics in the sunshine… 🌄😍 . De Grendel offers some of the best wine and views around so book your slot to enjoy one of my Durbanville wine valley picks. 🍷

12) Wine Sales and a New Menu at La Motte

View this post on Instagram

The beautiful La Motte in Franschhoek is open for wine sales again. Shop online or at the estate between 09:00 am -17:00 pm, Monday to Friday. . Wine tastings have also reopened and are available from Tuesday – Sunday. For more info on this, please visit their website or contact La Motte directly. 🍷 . Another exciting new development is the launch of their new menu at Pierneef a La Motte. With everything from light meals with charcuterie and free-range burgers to wholesome, hearty mains, delicious desserts and children’s options, this menu is sure to delight. 🍔🥧 . This estate is a firm favourite of mine and with its stunning gardens and surrounding, it makes for a perfect outing. 🌄

13) Fly Through the Skies with Cape Canopy Tour in Elgin

View this post on Instagram

Ready to soar through the skies and escape the city? Then I think it’s time you book a Level 2 adventure with Cape Canopy Tour in Elgin. . Enjoy a fun 4×4 drive up to the Hottentots Holland mountains where you will spend 4-5 hours exploring the 11 incredible slides (and a cool suspension bridge). Soar over gorges, climb mountain tops and immerse yourself in the heart of nature in the special Elgin Valley. . Learn about the indigenous flora and fauna from your friendly, experienced guides, who will ensure even more safety than usual, as strict health and safety measures have been put in place during COVID-19 times. . This includes mask and glove wearing at all times, staff and client screening and online check-in and payment. Plus, this takes social distancing to a whole new level as you disappear into the mountains with just the birds and nature for company. . For pricing, booking procedures and available times/days, please contact Cape Canopy Tour directly for enquiries to book your life-changing outdoor adventure. . This remains one of my most beautiful and epic travel experiences… I think you can see why!

14) Hop on the Franschhoek Wine Tram

View this post on Instagram

My favourite Franschhoek experience is reopening from 29 August… Yes, that’s right: the Franschhoek Wine Tram is coming back (soon)! . This incredible hop-on, hop-off adventure will reopen its doors from 29 August, with limited routes running every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 🚞🍷 . Safety is their primary concern so a few new rules will apply. . Guests should arrive at least 20 minutes before scheduled departure for screening and temperature checks.🤒 . Masks or shields must be worn at all times. 😷 . Safe social distancing must be adhered to. Seating will therefore be managed accordingly by staff. . Sanitisation stations will be available at the terminal, as well as upon arrival at each vehicle. Vehicles will be sanitised in between every disembarkment of guests at the wine estates. 🚂 . Any guests who refuse to abide by the necessary rules will be refused entry to the premises/service so please listen and do what is needed to protect yourself, staff and those around you. . For more information on routes and booking slots or to book an adventure, visit their website or contact the Franschhoek Wine Tram directly. . This is a seriously fun wine adventure that remains one of my best memories even three years later. 🍾
