Best Romantic Destinations in the Western Cape

Whether you are in the young stages of love; rekindling things with an old flame; or have been soulmates through decades, exploring a romantic destination is always good idea.

And what better time to do it than during February, so famously hailed as the month of love? What’s more, with Travelstart, you can fly to your destination, ensuring added relaxation and bonding time.

With all this in mind, I have put together a shortlist of the romantic destinations in the Western Cape, for you and your love to enjoy…

1) A Couples’ Getaway in the Cape Winelands: Dunstone Country Estate (Wellington)

I have stayed in my fair share of luxurious or charming accommodation offerings – but Dunstone Country Estate is a truly special find. Tucked away in the town-less-travelled: Wellington, Dunstone is a couples’ dream getaway.

With the surrounding mountains and farm’s own lush, picturesque setting as your backdrop, you can enjoy four- or five-star luxury in Dunstone’s beautifully appointed manor or one of its individual cottages.

My personal favourite (from experience) is the four-star Guava Cottage – but I also love the look of Dunstone Manor. (Although that would perhaps be better suited to a pair of couples travelling together or a family with children in toe.)

Nestled amongst the guava orchard and equipped with two king-sized bedrooms, a fireplace and its own gorgeous, private pool area, Guava Cottage is a charming Cape getaway.

Best of all, Guava Cottage is even child- and pet-friendly so, if needed, you can bring your real babies – or pooches – along on the trip.

2) An African Adventure in the West Coast: Thali Thali Game Lodge (Langebaan, West Coast)

Thali Thali Game Lodge will forever be etched in my mind (and heart) as one of the most special couples’ escapes in the Western Cape.

Found on the outskirts of Langebaan – itself worth visiting – Thali Thali provides the ultimate African safari experience. Particularly if you want to see some game; enjoy three-star accommodation; or soak up a sunset in the big sky country.

This West Coast-lying game and fynbos reserve offers a choice between stunning self-catering chalets, luxurious, en-suite glamping-style tents or a larger Cape farmhouse.

Add to that, a host of fun activities for couples to enjoy – think: thrilling game drives, couples’ archery, romantic dinners in its a la carte restaurant or soothing farm walks… – and you have a real African adventure on your hands.

Spier is one of the most well-rounded estates in the Western Cape. Situated in Stellenbosch, this popular, family-friendly estate also offers plenty for couples.

Enjoy a spa treatment at their sumptuous hotel; tuck into a romantic winelands picnic; or go for a sunset segway tour, the choice is yours… and every choice is a good one.

The hotel, meanwhile, offers delightful, four-star accommodation… Choose between its signature rooms, riverside and garden offerings or suites, each as lovely as the next.

What’s more, Spier also offers its lovely Hotel Restaurant, Vadas Smokehouse and Bakery and the Farm Cafe. Each of which is perfect for a good meal with your partner.

4) Thrilling Fun for the Adventurous Couple: Elgin (Elgin Valley)

The Elgin Valley is arguably one of the Cape’s most gorgeous valleys. Famous for its fruit and cool climate wines, Elgin has a thrilling sense of romance-edged adventure to it.

Like your favourite romance novel, the valley unfolds around you in a sea of colours and natural magic.

It offers visitors a classic steam train journey, fun markets and festivals, beautiful accommodation options, glamping – and best of all, a wide array of couple-focused activities. These include experiences like e-bike tours, ziplining, hiking and wine tasting.
