Best Wedding Venues for Travellers in the Cape Winelands

As travellers, we get to experience some incredible destinations across the world. Yet few destinations are as meaningful as the one you choose to host your wedding at.

With this in mind, I have put together a list of my favourite Cape Winelands wedding venues. Each of these venues has been visited and vetted by yours truly, so I can personally attest to their quality.

Scattered across South Africa’s most world-famous wine regions, these stunning destinations are individually unique, aesthetically appealing and professionally operated.

Each estate and venue offers carefully curated packages, incredible settings and imposing backdrops. Throw in world-class wines, breathtaking surroundings and lifelong memories… and you’re all set for the perfect wedding celebration!

A Day To Remember

Although getting married nowadays doesn’t mean you have to marry your way into debt or host the most extravagant wedding around… The idea is still to go the extra mile.

And you will want to plan a day worth celebrating (along with your marriage) for many years to come… After all, if it’s going to last forever, it should be memorable!

So, whether you’re actively planning your big day or scouting for the future, these are my best Cape Winelands-based wedding venues for travellers to tie the knot at:

Best Wedding Venues in Fairest Franschhoek

Boschendal is one of South Africa’s most iconic wine farms. And indeed, one of my personal favourites. (I have long joked that if money wasn’t likely to be an issue, I would someday get married at Boschendal.)

Encircled by the Groot Drakenstein and Simonsberg mountains, Boschendal enjoys a prime setting. This estate overflows with oak trees, gardens and verdant greenery. And it is blessed with some of the most beautiful Cape Dutch architecture around.

Given all this, Boschendal makes an impression no matter the occasion… So it is clear why it is such a highly sought-after wedding venue.

Choice of Venues:
  • Olive Press:
The Olive Press is a dreamy, natural space, which makes for a special venue. It is blessed with floor-to-ceiling glass doors, poplar tree trusses and picture-perfect views of the mountains and meadow fields. It’s ideal as a relaxed, yet ultra-chic wedding reception. This venue can host up to 250 guests.
  • Rhone Homestead:
Rhone Homestead is one of the estate’s finest offerings. It is steeped in history and yesteryear glamour and ordained with lush, private gardens. This beautiful venue is ideal for smaller, more intimate weddings. It can seat 50 guests.
  • Manor House Lawns:
For those craving Boschendal’s natural beauty, this open-air venue is ideal. The Manor House, a historic national monument, is one of the estate’s most iconic pieces and adds a real sense of occasion. This venue is best suited to smaller wedding functions and comfortably hosts 80 guests.
  • The Retreat:
This venue’s natural surroundings mean it is ideal for outdoor wedding celebrations. It can seat up to 72 people. The space includes: homely cottages, a communal boma and a natural swimming pool.
  • Exclusive Picnics: Werf Farm Picnic or Rhone Rose Garden Picnic:
For a more whimsical, laid-back approach to your wedding reception, choose between the famous Werf Farm Picnic or Rhone Rose Garden Picnic settings. The Werf Picnic area is idyllic with its white pavilion, playing fountain and endless lawn, stretching out beneath protective oaks. While the Rhone Rose Garden – spread out under equally proud oaks – offers a choice between carefully laid tables or a picnic lawn experience.

Good to know:

Additionally, Boschendal also offers different locations for popping the big question… And they can provide the following: pre-wedding braais; groom and bridal party gifting; post-wedding picnics and even romantic horse-and-carriage rides on your special day.

All function catering is done in-house by hugely talented executive chef, Christiaan Campbell and his capable team. Menus boast the finest in seasonal, farm-to-table goodness.

Mont Rochelle has enchanted me ever since I first stepped off the Franschhoek Wine Tram to explore this estate. It offers some of the best views around and both the buildings and gardens are impeccable. Indeed, there are few more impressive and imposing locations to celebrate your wedding at.

The Klein Drakenstein mountains serve as the ultimate backdrop, while each estate wedding venue offers something uniquely beautiful for your special day!

What’s more, this estate is very hands-on when it comes to your big day. For weddings of up to 30 guests, their excellent in-house wedding team has your back. For larger celebrations, they also help find a local wedding planner to assist with arrangements.

And I love that, if you are after a more relaxed, simple country wedding, you can opt for Mont Rochelle’s famous picnics… These are perfect for smaller, more intimate wedding gatherings of up to 10 people, as you can come together with your closest loved ones to celebrate by the dam.

Choice of Venues:
  • Rose Garden and Manor House Lawn:

This is certainly my favourite venue among Mont Rochelle’s outdoor settings – and, when you visit, you’ll soon see why. This three-tiered lawn and accompanying rose garden, which the Manor House overlooks, is absolutely gorgeous.

It provides swoon-worthy views so it is ideal for ceremonies or receptions. And, with a marquee set up, the area transforms into a magical reception area. (Note: Manor House exclusive use rate and marquee hire applies.)

  • The Manor House:

The Manor House is one of the most beautiful buildings I have seen. With the lawn and rose garden before it, it makes for a blissful setting. This grand lady can be utilised for your reception. To make a lovely feasting area, dining room chairs spill out into the courtyard. This venue can host 80 people. (Note: Manor House exclusive use rate applies.)

  • Country Kitchen

This lovely restaurant seamlessly doubles as a modern, country-style chapel. Better still, it can also serve for your reception area too. It offers excellent views of the surrounds and nearby Country Kitchen bell tower. (Perfect for posing next to, with your close friends and family.) The venue costs R 25 000 per day and can host 60 people.

  • Vineyard Rooftop

For a more unique spin on things, why not celebrate your wedding day from the vineyard rooftop? The Vineyard Rooftop allows you to soak up breathtaking mountain and vineyard views and it’s the ideal spot to say ‘I do’.

What’s more, it is well-positioned, lying adjacent to Miko Restaurant and Terrace. (It can host 80 people and is included in the hotel exclusive use rate and marquee hire.)

  • Gazebo

For outdoor weddings, look no further than the gazebo. It offers great views of the vineyards and can host 20 people. The Gazebo costs R 7 500 per day.

  • Vineyard Lounge

Especially ideal for snug, indoor weddings during winter, the Vineyard Lounge offers gorgeous mountain views and plenty of atmosphere. It costs R 7 500 per day and can host 20 people.

  • Miko Restaurant

Mont Rochelle’s main restaurant, Miko, is both an incredible restaurant and venue in one. It is well-suited to serving as a formal reception/dining area. It can host 60 people and is included in the exclusive use rate (although additional fees may apply).

Good to know:

Mont Rochelle can assist with luxurious accommodation (either in the Manor House or 22-room hotel) – and a variety of catering options. Choose between a casual braai (BBQ), an à la carte menu or a set menu (designed to your liking).

For wedding functions of more than 60 guests, Mont Rochelle can hire a marquee for you. Note: Marquee hire and arrangements incur additional costs. Also, please be advised that all wedding functions work on a ‘number of guests’ quote policy.

Located near the foothills of the Simonsberg, at the start of the Franschhoek Winelands, lies the family-owned and run Vrede en Lust Estate. This fine estate is one of the most esteemed wedding destinations around. Not only is it a dream to visit, with its beautiful Cape Dutch architecture, lovely eatery and incredible garden spaces and vineyards… But it is a truly special wedding venue too.

In fact, I’d go so far as to say it really is like hosting your wedding in the secret garden of the Winelands… and what could be better than that?

This estate has the necessary wedding facilities on-site… This helps remove the stress and travel time between locations away entirely!

What’s more, their talented wedding team is on-hand to ensure your wedding turns out as desired. They specialise in bespoke wedding packages and can tailor to each couple’s needs. Meanwhile, Vrede en Lust’s delightful eatery, Lust Bisto and Bakery, can handle all your catering needs.

At Vrede en Lust, you can hold your ceremony out on the picturesque lawn, which overlooks the vineyards and mountains beyond. Then, when it’s time to truly celebrate, head across to the majestic, all-season Vineyard Terrace.

And, situated adjacent to the Vineyard Terrace, is the historic cellar, which is included in the venue hire. The cellar is backed by generator power so even if Eskom’s power cuts strike – the party goes on undisturbed!

Personally, I love that, at Vrede en Lust, you can also enjoy idyllic photo sessions and pre-drinks in the gardens.

The Vineyard Terrace – combined with the cellar – makes for a wonderfully adaptable, impressive venue. Best of all, you can easily decorate it according to your choice of decor or wedding theme. It can seat up to 120 guests with the dance floor inside – or, weather-permitting, 150 guests with the dance floor outside.

Tying the Knot in the Durbanville Wine Valley

  • Canto Wines: A Stylish, New Offering on the Wedding Scene

Ever since its opening, this still-new, boutique winery, situated in the famous Durbanville Wine Valley, has been making ripples locally. Canto Wines may be smaller than some estates but it is charming and chic, in every possible way.

And with its stunning, chapel-like tasting room, which doubles as a beautiful, slick wedding venue, and impressive backdrop – I find Canto Wines to be one of the most appealing, new wedding venues in the Northern Suburbs or beyond.

meerendal-wine-estate

Meerendal Wine Estate is one of my favourite estates in the Durbanville Wine Valley. This pristine wine farm somehow manages to pull off timeless Cape Dutch architecture, beautiful vineyards and an overall delightful estate… All while keeping a modern, yet altogether homely feel about it.

Meerendal is a popular local choice for celebrations and functions, particularly in the Northern Suburbs. And really, it isn’t hard to see why this graceful estate comes so highly rated.

Not only do you get to even enjoy overnight accommodation in the luxurious Meerendal Boutique Hotel (which consists of the Manor House rooms – or adjacent Cottage’s Garden Suites) but Meerendal also offers its own magical chapel and reception venues.

Photo credit: Lilac Photography via D’Aria Wedding and Function Venue

D’Aria is not only a famous Durbanville wine estate, adored for its wines and beautiful setting – but thanks to Venue D’Aria, it is also one of the most highly rated, local venue and function providers in the Durbanville Wine Valley and beyond. (From personal experience and word of mouth, I can assure you that they are tops on both function/conference and wedding fronts.)

Set amid a forest of poplar trees and encircled by vineyards and farmlands, D’Aria is a peaceful haven in the Northern Suburbs… Here, time seems to slow down, as Winelands magic fills the air. Estate highlights, like the wooden bridge and picturesque vineyards, provide the perfect wine farm wedding backdrop.

Best of all, with its stunning venues, accommodation and in-house catering, they are one of the best equipped wedding venues around.

Choice of Venue:
  • Venue D’Aria (Weddings)

With its special poplar forest, incredible in-house catering (courtesy of Chef John Stemmet) and spacious deck, Venue D’Aria is an ideal place to host a unique wedding. Exchange your vows in the forest before enjoying taking couple photos around the farm or pre-drink refreshments on the deck.

The Main Hall is wonderful for larger or intimate reception gatherings. The venue offers 180 – 200 seats, including space for a dance floor or 250 seats without the dance floor. (I particularly love that all areas of the venue are wheel-chair friendly.)

Dreamy Wedding Destinations Beyond Cape Town

allesverloren-wedding-venue

Located in the Riebeek Valley, a region famed for its gorgeous weddings, Allesverloren is not only the oldest estate in the Swartland Region… But, to me, it is also one of the most beautiful.

With its imposing main hall, stunning gardens, blue gum forest, wooden bridge and time-honoured oaks… Allesverloren is far more than just an award-winning wine farm-turned-function/conference venue.

I’ve only visited this estate once, very briefly – and yet, when visiting, it’s hard not to get caught up dreaming about spending forever with someone you love… Yes indeed, pure Cape Winelands magic lives here.

All catering is done by Allesverloren FCV/Bertus Bester and there is a wide choice of menus to choose from. Compile your own and enjoy good food, fine wine and wedding bliss!

Choice of Venues:
  • Forest Chapel:
Cross over the wooden bridge, pass through tall blue gums… and then, exchange your vows in the midst of this wildly gorgeous, rustic chapel.
  • Main Hall:
Celebrate your reception in the airy, stone-faced venue hall. This purpose-built, minimalist venue lends itself well to each couple’s wedding theme. Most importantly, it comes furnished with custom teak chairs, round tables, crockery, glasses and cutlery, all of which are included in the hall hire. It can accommodate up to 200-250 guests – dependent on whether or not you opt for a dance area.
  • Lawns and Outdoor Areas:
Weather permitting, the venue hire also includes the use of the estate’s beautiful, spacious lawns and other outdoor areas. This allows you and your guests to jump head first into an authentic country-style wedding.
  • Veranda:
Couples have the option of sealing off the veranda (especially if the weather’s bad) and turning this space into a magical, fairy light-strung haven. When rain clouds or winter winds threaten, outdoor fires help to add a snug, charming ambiance to your wedding day.

Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate is arguably one of the most scenic, activity-rich wine estates you will find in the Western Cape.

But, not only that, it is also one of the chicest and most state-of-the-art. Everything from its tasting room interiors to the estate’s new outdoor facilities, ooze classiness and fun, while still being entirely modern and artistically inspired.

I also adore this estate’s enviable Overberg setting, which sees it perched on the edge of the peaceful Bot River Lagoon. Importantly, the lagoon also forms a key part of the estate’s visual appeal and offerings. Benguela Cove is also a stone’s throw away from the whale capital of the Cape, Hermanus, so it’s especially great to visit during whale season.

For your special day, you could ask for few more secluded and impressive venues than Benguela Cove. And, for added appeal, you can choose from one of their set wedding packages… or even create your own bespoke one! This gives plenty of exciting options to ensure your big day is a dream come true.

Choice of Venues:
  • Vineyards

Choose to celebrate your union in the beautiful estate vineyards. The views all-round are incredible so, even with the most minimal decoration, you are guaranteed a spectacular backdrop and setting. The vineyards can accommodate 100 guests.

  • Pontoon and Beach

One of the best aspects of Benguela Cove is the oh-so-fun pontoon boat ride. This takes you to one of the most exquisite, private beaches you’ll find anywhere. With the lagoon on one side and the ocean on the other, what could be more romantic than a boat ride, followed by a wedding sealed with a kiss atop a pristine sand dune?

Note: The pontoon boat can hold a maximum of 16 guests per trip. Given this, it is certainly ideal for smaller weddings with your closest loved ones in attendance.

  • Barrel Room

For a unique ceremony or reception area, the Barrel Room provides the quintessential wine farm venue. It offers a more rustic, interesting theme for your day. It can host  100-150, depending on your type of reception… For example, if you host an evening reception here, it can be pushed up to 150 guests.

  • Wedding Lawn

Benguela Cove’s wedding lawn is great for an outdoor weddings and it can appropriately host up to 150 guests.

  • Courtyard

The courtyard is one of my favourite features at Benguela Cove and I can certainly see it as a wonderful wedding venue too. It is spacious and elegant and offers lovely views from its central, more sheltered location.

For a wedding breakfast, it can host 200 guests. While for an evening reception, 300 guests is the limit.

  • Moody Lagoon

This chic, stylish restaurant rakes in good reviews – and it’s certainly one of the most beautiful restaurants I have seen in a while. The interiors are classy and tastefully done, perfect for wedding celebrations. And both the indoor and outdoor seating offers incredible views across the estate and lagoon, with the mountains proudly looming in the distance.

For a wedding breakfast, it can host 150 guests. While for an evening reception, this increases to 180 guests.

  • Cellar

With stunning chandeliers suspended from its vast ceiling, this industrial-chic cellar is the more unusual (and therefore exciting) choice of wedding venues at Benguela Cove. The cellar can host 150 guests for either a delicious wedding breakfast or a suave evening reception.

  • Cellar Door

And last but by no means least, even the cellar door area can be utilised for your special day. This is the smallest venue on the estate… However, it can nevertheless accommodate 80 guests for a wedding breakfast and 100 for an evening reception – depending on which option you prefer.

Good to know:

Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate is readily available to assist with your catering requirements – and the food and wine here is top class!

What’s more, they offer a choice between three exciting wedding packages: the Winery Package (R 500 p/p for 2019; R 550 p/p for 2020); Vineyard Package (R 600 p/p for 2019; R 700 p/p for 2020) and Cultivar/Platinum Package (R 750 p/p for 2019; R 800 p/p for 2020).

Alternatively, why not speak to them about creating your own unique wedding package?
