Pet-friendly travel – both in terms of accommodation and eateries – is becoming a major, important requirement for pet lovers.
To most of us – myself included – our pets are as much a part of our family as anyone else. So being able to or feeling welcome to bring them along matters.
(Obviously, not every trip or holiday is geared towards bringing your floof with. But most are suitable for pets, especially local day trips and getaways.)
In light of this, I wanted to share some pet-friendly accommodation and restaurants across the Western Cape. These are all places that I have personally visited or stayed at.
In most instances, I have not had my pet with. (Again, because cats are not welcome at as many places as dogs. Pet-friendly often only seems synonymous with dog-friendly.) That said, I have explored the places first-hand.
For this post, I have also gathered all the important facts and need-to-know information directly from the establishments.
Note: The focus on this post is pet-friendly travel primarily for cats and dogs. But you will see that some establishments welcome pets of all species and breeds!
Please note: Permits may be required when you visit the Table Mountain National Park with your dog. Failure to do so may result in fines.
However, as I am not featuring those hikes or places in this post directly – please do your own research into this.

Pet Dedication: Tom Ryan (01/07/2018 – 05/04/2024)
This post was originally inspired by and is now also dedicated to our OG beautiful, brave travel cat, Tom.
Tom was the best pet travel companion; he loved exploring new, pet-friendly places with me; quietly endured my off-key karaoke on solitary road trips with almost no complaint; and happily travelled with me from the age of four months right up until just a few months before his passing.
For some of our travels, Tom, my special heart cat, was also battling epileptic seizures and asthma (and later a devastating HCM and CHF diagnosis, which eventually claimed his precious life).
But, even through all these challenges, we still managed to safely travel together as a family unit.
Please note: It’s still always best to get your pet approved for travel by a vet. Especially if they have chronic health conditions or anxiety, like my Tomcat had.

Pet-friendly Accommodation and Restaurants Across the Western Cape
Without further ado, let’s dive in:
1) Knorhoek Wine Farm and Guesthouse (Stellenbosch Winelands)
Tom (my cat) and I recently enjoyed a wonderful one-night stay at Knorhoek Wine Farm’s elegant accommodation.
The guesthouse has a choice of B&B guest rooms/suites (with luxurious en-suite bathrooms) or self-catering cottages to choose from.
For our stay, I opted for the Loft Family Room, which can sleep three.

Not only is the accommodation affordably priced but it is the last word in understated Cape elegance and luxury.
Additionally, it comes with very necessary creature comfort from timeless, antique-style baths and/or showers to aircon, a king-sized bed, TV and DStv, WiFi, a safe, mini bar and an in-room tea and coffee station etc.
As a treat, I also ordered some of their excellent Knorhoek MCC (9/10) and some still water for my room.
Not only is Knorhoek happily pet-friendly but they are also incredibly child-friendly.
There is plenty of space for kids to run and play, as well as two beautiful pools (including a garden rock pool kiddies love) and jungle gyms etc.
Beautiful Views
We were also fortunate enough to have a lovely, private balcony with a garden table and chairs and umbrella for shade.
The balcony overlooks the farm’s tranquil garden and many pine and oak trees so it is pure bliss.
I sat out there for much of the afternoon with Tom alongside me in his pet backpack and we both loved it.
This was my first booked accommodation stay with Tom (although he has stayed over at friends’ and family’s homes before). So I was quite nervous but he quickly settled into the spacious room.
Truthfully, he loved exploring every nook and cranny – especially the loft window sills; these proved to be a huge hit.
Relaxed, Child- and Pet-friendly Vibes
While I enjoyed a pampered stay (with breakfast included), punctuated by a quick swim and a brisk, yet pleasant sunset hike on one of the farm’s many hiking trails – Tom was safe and secure at all times.
More importantly, we felt extremely welcome from the moment we arrived. Knorhoek’s staff were excellent to deal with, kind towards my pet and above all, friendly and helpful both in person and in our email correspondence.
I would definitely recommend them for a pet-friendly stay or hike. I cannot wait to return here.
General pet rules:
Apart from ensuring pets do not damage the furniture or disturb other guests, Knorhoek generally prefers it if pets are not left alone in the accommodation for extended periods of time when guests venture out.
(I only briefly left Tom alone in the room when I had to (like to go down for breakfast or a quick hike, swim) – so I was away from him no longer than 30-45 minutes.
As a precaution, I made sure he was settled; that there was nothing he could damage; and that he was not pining when I exited the room.)

Yes, there are several marked hiking trails of varying distance to enjoy on the farm itself.
The Forest Trail (2km) I did was lovely, with stunning views and nature all around.
Please note: Pets are welcome to join you on the hiking trails – but please do not let them disturb, scare or harm other guests or wildlife.
Also, if you will be taking your pet along, it is best to notify management of this.

2) Nitida Wine Farm (Durbanville Wine Valley)
Another beautiful wine farm that warmly welcomes well-behaved, leashed pets is Nitida Wine Farm in the scenic Durbanville Wine Valley.
This farm incredibly beautiful and family-friendly. It also has a tasting room and two excellent restaurants, in Tables and Cassia at Nitida, to enjoy.
Cassia offers some of the best breakfasts in the Western Cape, while Tables at Nitida is the perfect child-friendly restaurant. (It even looks like something out of a fairytale!)
Another great thing about this farm is that it is incredibly scenic. There is a beautiful dam, which Cassia overlooks, as well as historic cannons, proteas and vineyards and mountain views to enjoy.
General pet rules:
Visiting pets must be leashed at all times. And owners must clean up after them.

Both dogs and cats are welcome, provided cats are trained.

No. But there are plenty of other places near Nitida in the Durbanville area to take your pets for walks. For dogs, a great option is the Kenridge Bark Park.

3) Warwick Wine Estate (Stellenbosch Winelands)
Another Stellenbosch gem that is hugely pet- and child-friendly is the tranquil, picture-perfect Warwick Wine Estate.
I have visited this estate several times in recent years. Honestly, it is one of my favourites for so many reasons.
In addition to their top class wines and pairings, tasting room and venue (suitable for weddings and other special celebrations, events) , Warwick also offers gourmet burgers, seasonal picnics (in cool picnic pods!) and a fun vineyard safari.
The estate gardens are some of the prettiest anywhere. There is plenty here to keep kiddies entertained for hours on end – including a fountain for summertime splashes, wide open lawns and cool jungle gyms.
General pet rules:
Warwick has two simple rules guests should follow when visiting with pets:
- Keep your pet leashed at all times.
- Please clean up after your pet.
Also, more a request than a rule: please only bring well-socialised pets to the farm. That way, everyone has a good, relaxing experience.

4) Eagles’ Nest Wine Estate (Constantia Wine Valley)
Situated on the sheltered slopes of the Constantia mountain range and hidden up on high among the trees that encircle it, Eagles’ Nest is one of the Cape Winelands’ rare beauties.
Here, guests can enjoy beautiful wines and platters in a stunning garden setting.
With expansive lawns and a truly pet-friendly mindset if ever there was one, this estate is perfect for families, couples and solo travellers to visit with their four-legged friends.

5) Peppa Jacks Tex-Mex Grill and Bar (Durbanville)

This Mexican-meets-Texan-style eatery offers guests a wonderful, relaxed dining experience, complemented by great food and drinks and friendly service.
I first visited Peppa Jacks in 2018 shortly after their opening and loved the laid-back venue, with its outdoor- and indoor-seating options, Mexican-style decor and fun kiddies’ play area.
This eatery is perfect for a relaxed meal with friends or family.
In addition to their tasty, generously portioned food (which ranges from all things Mexican cuisine to burgers and meal combos), they also serve excellent craft beers, cocktails and of course, quality wines from the Durbanville valley.
Live music performances and a dog-friendly outdoor area make this eatery a winner.
General pet rules:
It is preferable for owners to keep their dogs leashed when visiting. Please also clean up after your pooches.

Regrettably, they are only dog-friendly. So other pets must remain at home.

Dogs are provided with fresh water. They usually receive plenty of cuddles from the staff.

No specific trails on-site but there is plenty of walking space, as they have a large outdoor area.

6) Blue Gum Country Estate (Stanford Valley)
Blue Gum Country Estate is a beautiful, tranquil guest farm and working wine farm situated in the scenic Stanford Valley, in the Overberg Region.
Nestled against the mountains with little more than birdlife, farm guests and scenic vistas surrounding you, Blue Gum offers a wonderful, restful accommodation experience for families, couples and yes, you guessed it: fur babies, too!
This relaxed, welcoming family-owned- and run-guest farm really makes a big point of being both family- and pet-friendly.
We were invited by farm owner, Anton, to enjoy a one-night pet-friendly stay with our cat and, honestly, I think our kitty enjoyed the stay almost as much as we did!
From the moment we arrived to our departure (where even the staff came to say good-bye to kitty outside reception), we all (cat included) felt so welcome and calm at Blue Gum.
When we entered our beautifully appointed, spacious Mountain View room, Tom, our brave travel cat, hopped out his travel carrier and immediately settled in, as if he’d always belonged there.
I’ve never seen Tom settle so easily into a new setting – and I’ve been travelling across the Western Cape with the boy since he was a four-month-old kitten.

A Night’s Stay at the Scenic Mountain View Room
Blue Gum’s Mountain View rooms are perfectly positioned and well-furnished to provide a relaxing, excellent stay for families, couples and even solo travellers.
The Mountain View rooms, where we stayed, can sleep 2-5 guests at a time.
Blue Gum Country Estate also has a stunning 10-12-sleeper villa and some Farmhouse rooms, which sleep 2-4 guests each.
The Mountain View rooms come with their own beautiful, sheltered porch (complete with outside seating and a great braai area), a spacious living area, a cosy, gated fireplace (ideal for those cold winter nights), panel heaters, WiFi, a fully equipped self-catering kitchen (with gas stove, microwave, bar fridge, kettle, toaster and all sorts of kitchenware you could need), a day bed (which can sleep two people) and a wonderful, king-sized bed.
Our kitchen also included some complimentary coffee/tea, fresh milk and water.
Apart from that, there is also an en-suite bathroom, with a huge, deep bath and lovely shower.
I found our Mountain View room exceptionally pet-friendly for Tom (usually there is a lot I need to pack away or shift to keep him safe), which was a huge relief.
Stillness All Around
From the moment we got out of the car right until waking up the next morning, one thing we felt keenly was the deep stillness and serenity that is present at Blue Gum.
If you’re a bird lover, you will also be delighted to hear some beautiful, unique bird calls, as Blue Gum is home to some 107 recorded bird species.
We felt so refreshed and soothed during our stay here. When you check into Blue Gum, you definitely leave your everyday stressors behind.
Tasty Meals and a Lovely Cafe
Blue Gum also has its own Block Shop (with everything from second-hand books to pre-loved LEGO and kiddies’ goods), a deli and more to enjoy on-site.
And that’s before you even visit their cosy Campbells Cafe, which offers breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.
The food and service at Campbells Cafe is excellent. We especially found our supper to be one of the best we have had anywhere.
Everything from the tasty, country cuisine to the friendly, hands-on service and intimate, yet cosy setting (there’s a roaring fire, wrap-around porch, comfortable indoor- and outdoor-seating and beautiful scenery to enjoy when dining here) was sublime.
The food is some of the best priced and tastiest we have had in a long time. What’s more, the cafe atmosphere was peaceful and unhurried.
Beyond that, our stay also included a lovely breakfast buffet, with the option of additional hot breakfasts.
Another huge perk about Campbells Cafe is you usually have the option to dine at the cafe or to request your meals be delivered to your room via room service.
A Wonderful Stay Right Through
As far as pet-friendly, relaxing country getaways rank, Blue Gum has secured a special, new place in my travel-loving heart.
Our whole experience of the farm and its people was faultless. I wish more institutions these days cared, not only about their guests but also their everyday lives too.
It’s very rare to find a place that understands that pets are, to many of us, like our own family or children and that family holidays mean the pets (yes, that includes cats and not just dogs) get to join in too.
Tom loved our stay – and undoubtedly, so did we!
Our little family unit left Blue Gum far happier, lighter and more relaxed than when we arrived.
I think this is testament to the quality of Blue Gum’s country offering and the warmth of Anton and his Blue Gum team.

However, I am not sure if these trails are pet-friendly, especially due to the nature and flora in the area, so please confirm this beforehand, as it also depends on the trail in question.

7) The Farmhouse Hotel (Langebaan, West Coast)
The Farmhouse Hotel is one of the lovelier pet-friendly places I have ever stayed. Not only does it have beautiful, tasteful accommodation but the views are quite stunning, especially if you stay in one of the Panoramic rooms like we did.
They also have an exceptional on-site restaurant in La Petite Maison (along with the more casual pub-style bar, Legend’s Bar), which offers hearty breakfasts, lovely lunches and fine dining dinners.
Another wonderful perk is the hot tub our room offered (again, with spectacular lagoon- and sunset-views) and the on-site Salon, which offers an assortment of relaxing treatments. (As I was sick with flu, we unfortunately didn’t get to try the hot tub but, if we stay here again, which we certainly want to, I definitely will!)
We stayed at The Farmhouse Hotel with Lucy, our little granny cat and brave adventurer, and our five-month-old baby and found the accommodation perfectly suited to both our ‘babies’.

Stay a Little Longer at The Farmhouse Hotel
During our stay, we spent two wonderful, peaceful nights at The Farmhouse Hotel.
Our personal highlights were the gorgeous views our room offered, along with the tea and scones that were served in the afternoon and the delectable, gourmet breakfasts offered by the restaurant.
But we also found the hotel- and restaurant-staff warm and welcoming; all consummate professionals.
They also went out of their way to make our little one feel welcome and help keep him entertained.
The hotel was also thoughtful enough to include a comfy pet bed and toy in our room for Lucy.
We always travel with our own pet things but this gesture meant a lot to us all the same, especially as passionate pet parents.
Our rooms were so quiet and peaceful at night, offering a true taste of the country-style vibe of the West Coast.
I also loved that we had both a bath and shower in our en-suite bathroom. Mama definitely made use of a warm bath on those cold winter nights.
Beyond that, little Lucy cat had slight trouble adjusting to our new environment at first but soon settled into the cosy, spacious room we stayed in.
All in all, this remains one of the most memorable pet-friendly stays we’ve enjoyed.
Another added bonus was seeing other furry friends outside near the main reception and parking area, including sweet resident cat, Nyala, who quickly befriended me during our luggage haul.

8) The Barn on 62 Cottages (Montagu, Route 62)
Having grown up in Montagu and lived there for nearly 20 years, it’s always a pleasure for me to revisit this quaint, welcoming town of my youth.
It had been some time since I last visited so I was especially keen to see how the town had blossomed in the few years since COVID-19.
We were headed for a pet- and child-friendly stay at one of Montagu’s verified accommodation and food gems, The Barn on 62. In recent years, The Barn on 62 has quietly made itself known for its warm hospitality, good food and lovely accommodation.
While we were originally meant to visit with our baby and our little granny cat, we had to leave our cat, Lucy, at home this time. However, I still reviewed the accommodation and eatery from a pet-friendly perspective and on this front, it checked every box as well!
This post details our stay, keeping in mind that it is ideal for pets, thanks to its farm setting, central location (you are within easy walking distance to some beautiful streets and shops in Montagu) and secure plot.

Tranquil Country Vibes, Great Food and Quality Accommodation at The Barn on 62
During our stay at The Barn on 62, we confirmed what I already knew: this is one of those modern-day additions to the humble town of Montagu that makes it a worthy destination for tourists and local South Africans alike.
It’s the kind of place that has all the small town charm and heart you could desire, while still offering the quiet luxury and efficiency more often associated with Big City life.
Our accommodation for our restful two-night stay was the Karoo Prinia, so named after a local fynbos bird. (Read all about this in your welcoming booklet.)
This gorgeous suite offered us a private, sorely tempting pool (even in the height of winter), downstairs, open-plan living room and kitchen (complete with tea- and coffee-making facilities and kitchen utensils), aircon, a sweeping porch and enclosed garden, lawn area, a handy fireplace and a beautiful upstairs section with an en-suite bathroom.
The views from our accommodation were spectacular, offering a generous view of the majestic Langeberg mountains and Montagu West in the distance.
Another incredible touch is the roof windows and large shower windows that offer the most stunning outdoor views. Even our baby, whose camp cot was setup for us by the main bedroom window, seemed awe-struck by the scenery outside.
A Relaxing Stay in the Klein Karoo Countryside
From the moment we arrived, we felt a sense of calm and peacefulness that only a small farming town like Montagu can provide. Barring the odd passing traffic, our chatter was only disturbed by the crowing roosters and birdsong.
Our accommodation was incredibly pet-friendly as the floors are easy to wipe and sweep if needed and the property offers a lovely fenced-in garden with a spacious lawn. There are also plenty of chairs to enjoy outside if you need some fresh air or wish to take your coffee outside.
I was sorry we didn’t bring Lucy along for the stay but pleased to see how welcoming both the accommodation and restaurant is to pets. It is important to note, though, that pets must be leashed and well-socialised if they are to enter the restaurant and you do need to clean up after your pets outside.
Beyond the restaurant and our accommodation, which even has the option of being extended to the adjoining cottage, Red Bishop, there is also a tranquil courtyard, a nice children’s play area, beautiful organic garden you can explore (please just ensure your pets don’t damage it or dig in here) and braai facilities are available on request for both the Karoo Prinia and Red Bishop accommodation.
Dine at the Coffee Bar and Eatery during Your Stay
Another thing we loved about our stay was that the on-site, beautifully appointed restaurant was a stone’s throw away, which meant we could pop in for takeaway coffee or relaxed meals, as needed, during our stay.
We joined for breakfast once and found the food and service to be sublime. Their coffee is also top class and as good as any I’ve had in the Mother City!
All in all, the Karoo Prinia and The Barn on 62 gave us the most wonderful, joyful family stay. As far as pet-friendly stays go, this one oozes quiet luxury and ultimate, simple comfort.
We loved every minute here and would happily return again! Martell and her team run a very tight and impressive ship indeed!

There are three accommodation options at Fields of Gold Farm.
You can choose to either book the one-bedroom Simunye Cottage on its own, the one-bedroom guest suite/flatlet (which forms part of the main farmhouse) or, of course, you can book out the entire four-bedroom Tuscan farmhouse. Either way, you are guaranteed a truly enchanting stay.
While the farm has some resident pets, including sweet Toffee cat, who curled up in my bed without so much as a bat of a ginger eyelid, there’s the added benefit that guests may bring their well-behaved dogs along!
If you don’t want owner, Sandi’s pets (like Toffee) coming round, please just let the hosts know. (But, honestly, having a farm cat visit us only added to the sense of welcome and belonging we felt here.)

Striking Accommodation Gold in the Western Cape Countryside
For our stay, which was kindly hosted by Sandi and Chelsea, we visited as a close friends group, which consisted of three adults and a toddler.
We had all the accommodation spaces available to us but opted to stay together in the Tuscan farmhouse. (Although I scouted out the other accommodation options and they are equally lovely! The cottage, especially, has its own quiet charm, with a dreamy bathroom and cosy kitchen-lounge space adjoining the bedroom.)
The eclectic, charming farmhouse proved the perfect space to enjoy casual chats, fun food prep, good conversation over a glass of red wine and, come the midnight hour, to simply, retreat and enjoy our individual privacy in each allotted bedroom and bathroom. It was pure bliss. So much so, that we were sad to leave after our two-night stay.
We had such a lovely time milling about in the garden, while we braaied or whipped up food in the spacious, well-equipped kitchen (which has its own handy wash room to the side).
Thoughtful Touches and Space to Live
Another thing we loved about the farmhouse was the upstairs balcony and the glorious pool- or mountain-views we enjoyed from every part of the farmhouse. The rock pool, while too icy during our winter stay, is sorely tempting and looks magical both by day and by night (when it’s lit up with a mesmerising blue light). While the peaceful garden, hammock and outdoor tables add ‘slow down and enjoy’ reminders to the whole experience.
The bathrooms are stunning too, each equipped with a shower or bath (or both, in some cases). Beyond this, the farmhouse also has a vast lounge, dining room area, breakfast nook, small upstairs gym and more to enjoy.
Although you are a short drive from the main tarred road below (the stay is, however, accessible via a farm road, so take it slow, though it is easily manageable for a standard car) – the only sounds you really hear are birdsong or the frogs croaking contently come nightfall.
For us as parents, we were so glad to find a high chair and cot provided for our cat-loving little adventurer. It’s rare for hosts to think of parents travelling with small kids in this way but it was such a help to us.
It’s safe to say that, with this accommodation stay, you really have struck gold.

My Pet-friendly Travel Tips and Recommended Products
In the post, I also share some sound, yet personally tried-and-tested pet-friendly travel tips, all based off my own experiences of travelling with my cat.
These are tips and tricks that I have found work best to minimise stress and distraction (when travelling), while also keeping your pet safe.
Because, after five-plus years of journeys to and from home (as we travel from Cape Town to Montagu and back) and many hours on the road together – my cats and I are old hands at this travel thing.
I am also going to recommend some personally loved travel products that we have used (or wanted to use) over the years.
All of these pet products are available locally. These products, in turn, either support local brands or add a little less strain on the planet, due to their sustainable or eco-friendly nature.
Disclaimer: Please note that I am not a vet or pet/travel expert. I am simply sharing what works for me and my pets.

Peruse or Skip My Extended Pet Travel Tips:
I have travelled a lot with Tom (and now with Lucy, our granny cat) and these are some of the tips and tricks that have served me best.
This is not a one-size-fits-all list. Obviously, you know your pet’s needs and character best – but most of these are either widely recommended or are my personal pet travel tips.
My Full Pet Travel Tips’ List
1) Ensure your pet’s shots are all up-to-date. Especially for deadly viruses like rabies.
2) In case of emergencies, keep a digital copy of your pet’s vet card on your phone. Also, if you are visiting an unfamiliar area/town/province, research the nearest vet.
3) Remember to pack along and keep all your pet’s medication cool. If they are on chronic medication, order and collect this a week or two before your trip.
4) To provide some reassurance and familiarity, especially when travelling or staying at new places, pack in your pet’s favourite toys, treats or blankie(s).
5) Ensure your pet has had both tick and flea treatments recently. This is especially essential during tick season when you or your pet can easily pick ticks up in long grass, fields or fynbos.
I personally use Bravecto Spot-on treatment for our cats, as it offers three months’ worth of tick and flea protection. But speak to your vet about which product is best and safest for your pet.
If you go for hikes or walks with your pet, always check yourself and your pet afterwards for ticks.
6) Ensure your pet has had a dewormer in the last two to three months. This is just good practice in general but also important if you are taking them outdoors or to new places.
7) Invest in durable, travel-friendly bowls, like the Rogz stainless steel bowls. These bowls have a good grip, dry out easily and are really easy to clean and wash out.
8) Many places do not allow pets on the furniture so pack in a pet bed and blankets as needed.
Also, even if the venue is happy for my pet to sit or sleep on the furniture, I always pack in an old blanket that I can spread out to avoid excess pet hair and/or any stains, marks on the establishment’s sheets or bedding.
9) Always pack in still bottled water for your pet so, no matter where you go, they have easy access to clean, safe drinking water.
10) If your pet sheds a lot, try brush or bath them a day or two before travelling. This really helps with preventing excess shedding and dander. Plus, they love the added attention!
11) If your pet suffers from allergies or even asthma like Tom, try minimise possible triggers at your accommodation destination or room. These include things like flowers, plants, scent diffusers etc.
Also, keep in mind that many plants, flowers, diffusers and essential oils are often highly toxic or deadly to pets. So it’s best to keep them out of harm’s way and your pet’s reach.
Whenever I take Tom anywhere, I actually remove flowers/vases and diffusers from the room and hand them over to management. It’s just for my own peace of mind but at least I know he’s safe from possible in-room dangers.
12) Invest in eco-friendly poop bags like the Olly and Max ones. They are perfect for travel, are easy to pack in and of course, are better for our environment too. For hygiene purposes when travelling, I even wrap Tom’s poop scoop up in one.
13) If you need to take a litter box with – and please always assume you do as places do not provide this for your cat – use a black rubbish bag or recycling bag to wrap the litter and/or litterbox in. This keeps your litter from spilling out during travelling and you don’t have to worry about opening a new bag just for the trip. Plus, it’s one less thing to pack in!
14) Pack a dustpan and brush in – just in case of spillage, messes or litter.
15) Before visiting a venue, especially an accommodation establishment, call or email ahead and check what the pet rules and/or fee (if applicable) are. Make sure you cover all your bases before visiting.
When I visited Knorhoek with Tom, upon booking, I informed them that I was bringing my cat. I also called ahead to reception before travelling to inform them again. And, when checking-in, I asked if it was okay to bring Tom in with me.
16) Find out if your pets (especially cats) are allowed outdoors and either invest in a leash, pet harness or pet backpack, if so.
I have an excellent space pod/pet backpack for our cats that doubles perfectly as a carrier too! Plus, I can safely take Tom outdoors with me and he cannot escape but he can still see, smell and soak up the surroundings. 🙂
17) For car travel, make sure your pet has a large, roomy carrier to stretch out or lie down in. Our cats have a big carrier that they often lie down in while we drive.
You could also consider putting down an absorbent mat or pad in case of accidents while travelling – but I have never needed one with Tom so I just leave his carrier as is. Having said this, I avoid giving him food or water at least an hour or two before we set off. And I try ensure he uses his litterbox a short while before we leave.
18) When travelling by car, ensure your pet is secured in a car harness or in their carrier. This minimises distractions while driving and keeps them safer too. I normally put Tom in his carrier next to me and strap it in using the seatbelt. This ensures he stays fixed and secure while driving.
19) Animals often get stressed and pant or overheat when travelling, especially during summer. Because of this, I almost always keep the aircon on when Tom’s in the car with me – even in cooler weather.
If needed, give your pet a calming product before travel. There are a number of these on the market, including famous brands like CalmEze but you also get medically prescribed ones like Gabapentin. I don’t personally always use these for Tom for general travel but he does have a vet-issued sedative for vet visits.
20) Try book accommodation that offers nearby parking. Not only does this make loading/unloading easier but it also minimises the risk when transporting your pet inside, especially if you have a cat.
21) When you arrive at your destination, get your pet safely indoors and settle them in before you leave them alone for a short time or head out on any adventures. Give them their food, water and litterbox so they feel at home.
Also, please do not leave your pet alone for hours in a hotel room. Not only is it unfair on your pet. But they might pine for you, damage items or make noise that can disrupt your neighbours.
I understand that you cannot take your pet out all the time or be there 24/7 so going out for a short outing, experience or a meal is normally fine – but leaving them alone in a unfamiliar, small room for ages is unkind.
When I stayed at Knorhoek, the longest I left Tom alone for was about 30-45 minutes and that was only because I went for a swim and a hike and I didn’t want to risk taking him with as it was very hot that day (35 degrees Celsius). I also obviously had to leave him alone when I went down for breakfast and checked out but that’s different.
Either way, I made sure he was settled and quiet after a few minutes of me exiting the room.
22) For cats, always take a cat scratcher with and ensure their nails are trimmed before travelling. It is also a good idea to check what furniture the place has and try plan around that to avoid damage or unwanted scratching.
23) For stimulation, take some toys from home with for you and your pet to play with. Also, give them lots of love and cuddles, especially when you first arrive at a new, strange place. Strange sounds, sights and smells alarm them so they need you to remember and take care of them. A holiday doesn’t mean you should neglect or forget about your pet.
If you take them with you, then you are responsible for looking after and attending to their needs. And, sometimes, that means putting your own aside or making compromises on what you might have initially planned to do.
24) If needed, pack away things and pet-proof the room or cottage, especially if you need to leave your pet unattended.
Otherwise, you can leave them in the carrier for very short stints but most will not enjoy or tolerate this well.
25) If you need to leave your pet alone in the room, make sure that you leave the room locked with a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign up. Close all windows and lock the doors too.
26) Before checking out, try leave the place as you found it and, if needed, clean up after your pet. Anf, if your pet damages, soils or breaks something during your stay, just be honest and tell management immediately.
27) For your first big getaway, it is often a good idea to book a place closer to home. That way, if your pet is unhappy or unwell, you can take them back home or to their primary vet. This also so minimises travel time in the car.
28) Try not let your pet miaow or bark too much and disturb other guests. Tom miaows a bit when I first leave the room but usually he stops after a minute or two. Otherwise, if I am in the room with him, I try keep him as quiet as possible.
29) Before taking your pet on hikes or walks, check with management if this is safe and okay. At Knorhoek, they were more than happy for me to take Tom on hikes in his pet backpack as long as I felt safe to do so. They also assured me the trails are quiet and there are no dogs on the property, so I had less to worry about.
30) Don’t leave food out for too long in rooms. It attracts ants. Rather give your pet a snack and pack the excess food away for later. Also, don’t be alarmed if your pet won’t eat, drink or pee straight away when you arrive at a new place. Tom is usually a bit overwhelmed at first because everything is new and exciting. So, once we arrive at our new destination, he usually takes a few hours to eat, drink or use his litterbox.
31) It might be a good idea to draw the blinds or curtains. That way, your pet can see outside. Tom will happily sit at a window or glass door watching birds for hours. This also reassures them because they can check what is outside if they hear strange voices or sounds.
Just be wary of curtain cords and blind strings. Most cats try swat at or play with these. With Tom, I make sure they are secure and out of reach or I tuck them behind the blind/curtain so they don’t attract his attention.
32) Leave a pet bed, carrier or backpack for your pet to climb into if needed. Tom usually hides under furniture if he gets scared. So I always want him to feel he can go into a safe spot that he knows, like his carrier, if needed.
33) Do a room sweep and pack or throw away anything your pet might try nibble on or play with. This includes things like plastic bags, pills, hair ties, dangerous plants or toiletries and the like.
Always zip up or neatly pack away your things when your pet is alone in the room. I generally put everything away or out of reach so I know Tom can’t damage or get into any of my bags, especially my toiletries, handbag, makeup bag and medicine bag.
34) If needed, invest in pet sunscreen or avoid taking your pet out if they might burn. Pets can get sunburn and skin cancer the same as us. They can also overheat very quickly in high temperatures so monitor that closely.
35) If needed, invest in collapsible pet bowls or pet water bottles. I never give Tom food or water when we travel but I have never needed to because our longest trip is four hours and he has always been fine going without till we arrive. He has also thankfully never had any accidents in his carrier.
But most people like to stop and let dogs drink or stretch their legs on longer journeys.
36) If needed, keep a radio, TV or aircon on to drown out noises, so your pet stays calm. It also muffles any sounds your pet makes.
37) Be careful entering and exiting your room or accommodation; you don’t want your pet escaping.
38) Keep the litterbox clean and in one spot for the duration of your stay. Do the same for their pet bowls.

I am not sure where in Cape Town you stay or how far you want to travel each weekend but many of the towns like Montagu, Stanford, Tulbagh and other areas are quiet and welcoming to pets.
It would be good to research some places in your suburb (for example, Southern Suburbs has some green belts for walking, while Northern Suburbs has lots of parks, including Kenridge Dog Park) – and to find which nearby towns can work for you.
