Best Cape Winelands Farm Shops

The Cape Winelands offers visitors and locals a treasure trove of food and drink experiences, outdoor adventure and Cape history but one of the most underrated wine farm offerings are local farm shops.

My Pick of the Best Cape Winelands Farm Shops to Enjoy

Personally, I love a wine farm shop almost as much as any other attraction on our local wine farms – and in this post, I share why.

We look at wine farm shops across the Winelands – everything from local farm grocers and wine shops to local cheese shops brimming with local delicacies.

Farm Grocer, Laborie (Paarl)

wine-shop-farm-grocer

After our first visit to Laborie, I fell head over heels in love with the estate. It really is one of the loveliest, family-friendly wine estates I’ve visited. But what makes it even more special is the excellent, well-stocked Farm Grocer.

The Farm Grocer is an Aladdin’s cave filled with fresh farm produce and local goods from a range of top suppliers.

Here, you find everything from a delightful wine shop to fresh produce, meats and deli goodies, fresh breads, sweet treats, sun hats and much, much more.

farm-grocer-laborie-estate

What it offers:

The Farm Grocer prides itself in offering a wide range of “quality, locally sourced, seasonal and homemade produce”. It’s designed to aid guests in healthier eating options, while also promoting higher sustainability, which helps to keep the carbon footprint as low as possible.

They believe in supporting local suppliers (everyone from farmers and growers to artisans and bakers) and this is something they do really well.

I saw so many well-known local brands available here, including Funky Ouma, Brenda’s Preserves, Mamamac’s Handmade Rusks & Biscuits and more.

In-store you find everything from pasture-fed meat, fresh produce, dairy products, traditionally made cheeses and charcuterie items.

(We bought some cheese and charcuterie goods to enjoy at home and they were delicious and reasonably priced!)

There are also other goods like:

  • pantry essentials
  • speciality items
  • tasty treats
  • pasture-raised eggs (sourced from Boschendal’s happy hens)
  • a great, well-stocked wine shop (which focuses on wines from the Groot Drakenstein region)
  • Stoep products from Laborie’s own bistro-style eatery, Stoep
  • cakes to order
  • the Farm Grocer Box (this is stocked with organic produce and is available weekly)
  • and even The Boer & Butcher’s famous biltong and braai essentials

Fresh produce available:

Yes, they have a wonderful array of organic, locally sourced fresh produce.

Better still, they offer their own Farm Grocer Box. This organic produce box contains a range of carefully, responsibly grown organic produce that is sourced fresh each week.

Note: Depending on what is seasonally available, the organic produce varies from week to week.

Where to find it:

Boschendal Farm Shop and Butchery, Boschendal (Franschhoek)

boschendal-farm-shop

Boschendal’s Farm Shop (and Butchery) is one of my all-time favourites. Over the years, it has remained consistently beautiful and honestly, there seem to be more great goodies every time I visit.

What’s more, when the farm has its festivals and events, like their annual Citrus Festival or over Easter, the farm shop bursts with an array of specialty products, like lemon-and-poppy seed shortbread or plum cordials.

Alongside their own incredible farm fresh offerings (like their Black Angus beef and Duroc pork, fresh produce, baked goods, free-range eggs and much more), Boschendal’s Farm Shop and Butchery offers a wide range of locally sourced products.

boschendal-citrus-products-store

Visually, the Boschendal Farm Shop and Butchery is a real treat; they always put a lot of effort into their shop displays and the shop is always busy.

I always pop in before I head home for some tasty treats or cordials. They are divine!

Plus, Boschendal offers so much for visitors to enjoy besides, so it’s worth spending a few hours exploring this historic estate.

What it offers:

boschendal-farm-shop-franschhoek

The farm shop essentially has different sections to it.

These include the bakery (stocked full with freshly baked, farm-style loaves, handmade confectionaries, vegan rusks and other divine pastries), butchery, fresh produce, eggs and other goodies.

butchery-boschendal

In fact, they usually even serve freshly made takeaway coffee at the farm shop (there are also usually different ice-cream or coffee trucks/stalls outside the shop area too).

Fresh produce available:

boschendal-winter-experiences

Yes, they have fresh produce available from both their Farm Shop and their online store. This includes a selection of seasonal, hand-picked or harvested fruit and vegetables.

Bonus shop(s):

Aside from its on-site stores, which even includes a gorgeous ceramics shop, Boschendal also has an amazing online shop.

The online shop stocks everything from homeware to gifts, wine and brandy and of course,  pantry stock, ready-made meals and other fresh goods.

boschendal-ceramics

Best of all,  for online orders over R500, Boschendal offers free delivery. Deliveries take place on business days (including public holidays) to street addresses and main centres across South Africa’s provinces.

Alternatively, if you stay nearby, you can choose the ‘Click and Collect’ option and collect your goodies directly from the farm yourself.

The Cheesery Shop, Dalewood Fromage Estate Cheese (Paarl)

dalewood-farm-cheesery-shop

Since I first savoured their cheeses with a winelands picnic in 2014, Dalewood’s cheeses have been firm favourites of mine.

So you can imagine my excitement at visiting this tranquil Paarl farm, an integral part of Dalewood Fromage Estate Cheese, to see their beautiful Jersey cows (their gorgeous golden ladies are well loved and looked after here) and to stock up with tasty goodies from their excellent on-site cheesery shop.

What I love about Dalewood is their passion and care for their products.

dalewood-farm-jersey-cow

All their cheese- and dairy-products are made using their own Jersey milk. They also employ a regenerative farming approach and specially handcrafted techniques that make their farm and cheese-making process run seamlessly.

This farmstead cheesery not only supplies many local shops, grocery stores and wine estates with their cheeses but, as I mentioned before, you can visit the farm and stock up first-hand.

dalewood-farm

The shop has a wide array of Dalewood cheeses, their divine jams and spreads (try the Pinotage and Port preserve), gorgeous accessories (including branded butter dishes, egg racks and more), stunning wooden cheese boards and preservative-free dairy products (including their full cream Jersey feta).

I have never had anything but the finest taste experience from Dalewood’s products – and I have sampled my fair share of them in recent years. Their wineland camembert cheese is simply unparalleled in my mind.

dalewood-cheeses

And I love that all their packaging is tasteful, eco-friendly and high quality too. (Their tiny preserve jars are the cutest!)

There is a reason that almost all local wine farms use this Paarl family business’s cheese(s) with their picnics or sell their cheese packs in their own delis.

What it offers:

The Dalewood cheese shop offers all the goodies you can find on their online shop – as well as a few bonus goods, including cookbooks, fresh fruit and seasonal items (like over Easter time), baked goods and so much more.

Their shop is small but mighty in its stock and it has the most welcoming, homely feel to it.

dalewood-fromage-cheesery-shop

Fresh produce available:

Yes, they usually have some fresh produce available in their adorable cheesery farm shop at Dalewood Farm.

Bonus shop(s):

Dalewood Fromage recently launched a new online shop called the Kaas (Cheese) Club. This is your one-stop-shop for all their best cheeses, as well as dairy products, crackers, preserves and kitchen accessories (including a wide range of specialty knives and boards).

Their online shop ships to different parts of South Africa (including Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria, Cape Town, the Cape winelands and surrounds) but does not yet cater to nationwide shipping.

For the latest news on all the good stuff – subscribe to their ‘Kaas Club’ email list!

Fairview Deli and Shop, Fairview (Paarl)

Over the years, Fairview’s Deli and Shop, located within their Tasting Room, has continued to grow and thrive.

Their ever-popular farm deli is a hive of activity that offers visitors a range of condiments, old-fashioned jams, artisanal breads, free-range eggs, farm-reared, free-range meat and yes, you guessed it: Fairview’s own incredible cheese(s), which includes over 50 cow’s milk and goat’s milk cheeses.

fairview-farm-shop

Personally, I have always loved browsing this bustling deli in the picturesque Paarl Winelands.

While you are there, be sure to say hi to this lovely Paarl estate’s clever resident goats and pop into the child-friendly Goatshed Restaurant for a bite to eat.

What it offers:

The Fairview deli has a wide range of products – from Fairview cheeses to fresh breads, olive oil, yoghurt, preserves, eggs and meat.

Fresh produce available:

I could be wrong here – but to the best of my understanding, no. They primarily focus on deli goods, including cheese- and dairy-products, baked goods, preserves, eggs and the estate’s meat, including free-range lamb and Red Angus beef.

fairview-deli

That said, the estate also has a delightful bakery – stocked full with everything from croissants and bretzels to pastries and cakes baked fresh daily – that caters to both the deli and their own restaurant.

Bonus shop(s):

Fairview also has a great online shop, called the Fairview Marketplace, which features both their estate wine, deli products, club exclusives and much more.

Beyond Fairview’s own shops, neighbouring Spice Route Destination also offers a wonderful selection of shops, family-friendly attractions and artisan stores.

Spice Route’s diverse shops include Brenda’s Deli, De Villiers Chocolate and The Trading Company. Read more about Spice Route Destination’s artisan stores here.

The shop’s Homeware section, meanwhile, has an ever-changing array of fine living home decor (from table cloths to calendars), each a reflection of the farm’s seasonal changes and vibrancy.

Each homeware item is a labour of love, created by skilled, passionate hands, before being thoughtfully brought to life and/or finalised for store sale.

In addition to these two sections, you also have the following rooms:

  • Scented Room (where you can catch whiffs of waterblommetjie blooms, clivias and fragrant fynbos or shop for olive oil soaps, for example);
  • Milk Room (where fresh farm cheese and dairy products await; including Babylonstoren’s own water buffalo products, like the ‘water buffalo gelato’ or their unique ‘hang op’ yoghurt cheese. Other cheese goods include imported delicacies, aged cheeses and soft, fresh cheeses.);
  • Meat Room (where you can buy everything from biltong to droewors and smoked bacon);
  • Lekker Room (stocked full of sweet or decadent treats, including vegan fudge, four different types of chocolate, citrus and almond rusks and even steaming coffee).

They have some quality fresh produce available at the farm shop – otherwise, you can order directly from their excellent online shop.

Beyond this, you can also savour the farm’s fresh fruit and vegetables year-round at their farm-to-fork restaurants.

While different from your typical winelands farm shop, Ludwig’s Roses at Klein Joostenberg is a wonderful stop for garden lovers and travellers alike.

Not only do they stock hundreds of rose varieties (and offer delivery across the Western Cape and surrounding areas) but they also sell some lovely rose accessories and products.

Situated along in the scenic Banhoek Valley, on the Morgenzon Trust Farm, this beautiful farm stall has the most impressive array of fresh produce, gifts, sauces and even baked goods to enjoy.

Brenda’s Preserves has always been an incredible stop at Spice Route Destination but I love that this stunning farm shop has now properly moved into the Spice Route fold and can be experienced at the main part of the farm.

spice-route

spices-brendas

Especially as Brenda’s Preserves is, by all accounts, the most wondrous place to browse, with everything from deli products and preserves to thoughtful gifts, natural ingredients, internationally inspired spice blends and so much more.

Included here on-site is also a glorious tea spot in Nigiro’s Spice Route tea kiosk, which offers exciting tea tastings and the widest range of teas (which you can sniff your way through) I think I’ve seen.

As a tea lover, I was in heaven exploring their corner of the store.

What it offers:

Well, I want to say everything under the sun – and that’s hardly an exaggeration. You have to experience it for yourself – it’s that simple.
