Since 2018, my Northern Suburbs Food Gems post has consistently done phenomenally well. I’ve really tried to maintain it over the years, adding new spots or removing those that close. But I thought maybe it’s time for a post on newer eateries too.
My existing post remains pretty comprehensive (so do check it out for sure) but there’s always a new place popping up in the Northern Suburbs these days. And it’s time I share some of the newer Northern Suburbs restaurants and coffee shops to try.
New to the Northern Suburbs
Mezza Luna Caffé and Trattoria

Cuisine:
Italian

Location:
Cobble Walk Shopping Centre, Verdi Boulevard, Sonstraal Heights, Northern Suburbs
Best for:

Casual, elegant coffee dates or a stylish meal out, depending on whether you visit the caffé or the trattoria, of course.

Why go:
Mezza Luna and its sister eatery, Mex-Si-Can (across the way) have breathed fresh life into the newly revamped Cobble Walk Shopping Centre.
They are also truly lovely food additions to the Northern Suburbs.

Mezza Luna has a small caffe and trattoria that spill over into two parts of the shopping centre.
While I actually love the caffe more personally (good quality pizza and Italian-style coffee with biscotti? Sign me up!), the restaurant is great too.

Staff are friendly, attentive and the food is pretty varied and solid across the board.
We actually took our little one to both Mezza Luna sections and received a really warm, family-friendly welcome, despite Mezza Luna being on the fancier side.

The Daily Coffee Café Okavango

Cuisine:
Continental but with a South African twist.
Location:
Okavango Crossing, corner of Langeberg and Okavango, Brackenfell, Northern Suburbs
Best for:
A good bite or coffee as a catch-up/for a meeting, takeaway drinks and a classy, yet relaxed sit-down meal.

Why go:
The Daily Coffee Café has branches across South Africa and honestly, they are consistently good. I’ve tried ones everywhere from Mpumalanga to Cape Town to Langebaan and found the food and service good throughout.
But, our favourite is our old locale, The Daily Coffee Café Okavango.
This branch has truly attentive, friendly service (the owner(s) really monitor things well) and whether you pop in for a takeaway coffee or a tasty sit-down meal, the experience is always positive.

We’ve never really gone here and seen this branch empty or quiet and, for good reason.
It’s also been a saving grace to me while I was pregnant and struggling to eat anything so maybe I’m biased but we love this spot!
We have sampled everything from their butter chicken curry to the freshly baked scones or eggy benedict and always had a good meal.
We also often enjoy their takeaway coffee because, since my postpartum phase, I run on caffeine and love.

Haus Café by Cake Canteen

Cuisine:
Proudly South African, female-empowered sweet treats, cakes and good drinks.
Location:
Various Haus Cafes across the Western Cape and Johannesburg.
They are also based at The Woodmill, Stellenbosch.
Why go:

Cake Canteen is one of my secret addictions – we’ve tried at least two of their branches and loved both.
There’s something so powerful about all the pink (especially after the impact Barbie had) and these women working together to make great things happen.
I fiercely love that they are collaboration over competition focused – it’s so refreshing! Especially in this social media-driven world, where everyone is out to better the next person online. And in a time where women are constantly trying to be pitted against each other in everything we do.
As a bonus, to date, they support 20+ local bakers and the list keeps growing!

Cake Canteen has teamed up with Hertex Fabrics to create some elegant café spaces, where you can browse Hertex fabrics, furniture or homeware goods, while enjoying a great slice of cake or takeaway treat in a Haus Café by Cake Canteen.

They have expanded a lot in the past year. They now have stunning café branches in Gardens, Stellenbosch at The Woodmill, Bellville and more recently, Paarl and Johannesburg too.
Our favourite is their Bellville branch personally. Although, honestly, we haven’t really had a bad experience with them yet in any capacity and their service is top notch (the owners are also very attentive to what’s going on around them).
Order Online Too
If you can’t visit in person, try order on their Cake Cart. Or grab some treats on the eco-friendly-inspired Refreshi app.
It doesn’t hurt that their cakes, beverages (try the Strawberry Shortcake-flavoured latte; thank me later) and sweet treats (everything from cake pops to doughnuts) are all beautifully presented, lovingly baked and above all, delicious to the taste.
I love that they don’t have a fixed cake menu either. It means there is almost always something new and exciting to sink your teeth into! A win for any cake lover, I’m sure you’ll agree. 🙂

Best for:
A lovely catch-up, quick date or even a quiet Zoom meeting.
(Another thing: They have some great playlists.)

Plato Coffee – Durbanville

Plato Coffee might be a national coffee icon. And, as it’s coffee sculpted on community, I’ve always been a fan.
I’ve never encountered a bad Plato branch yet. And, more impressive still, never had an order I didn’t love.
But now the Northern Suburbs has an array of coffee shops to choose from and, some days, I find it’s almost hard to know which to pick. If all else fails though, we tend to default to Plato Coffee.
Cuisine:
Good coffee, sweet treats and some light snacks.
Location:
Various but I love the Durbanville branch best.
Although they have nice Brackenfell and Kenridge branches too now.
Why go:

Aside from the hot and cold beverages (their coffee and freezos are divine), light meals and treats, the staff are always friendly and fun, the coffee cup quotes are cute and the setting is clean, pristine and stylish all in one.
Best of all, coffee lovers? They are open from six to six daily, except Sundays when they open an hour later at 07:00 am.
Best for:
Meetings (judging by the laptop-wielding coffee addicts normally present, it’s a good work café), cute dates and family-friendly outings.
And, if like me, Mama needs her coffee, there is a wide selection of excellent drinks to choose from. But the warm Dirty Caribbean Mocha and Mondvol cookies (stocked in most Cape Town branches) are the perfect pairing.

Woolworths Café | The Village Square and Tyger Valley

I know, I know – it’s “just” a Woolies Café but, as parents, they really just are our comfort spaces, okay?
Stylish, varied, lovely, seasonal menus (which includes a wonderful, creative kiddies’ menu that is even baby-friendly (bonus, my baby approves) and the staff are always hugely welcoming to solo diners, couples and families alike.
While the V&A Waterfront branch tends to be our favourite (we’ve had some truly special dates there and the harbour, ocean views are dreamy beyond), we also love the Tyger Valley and Village Square branches in Bellville and Durbanville respectively.
Cuisine:
Continental and wonderfully varied. Everything from fresh breakfasts to decadent treats, thick shakes and delicious lunches.
Location:
Tyger Valley Shopping Centre or The Village Square.
Why go:
For a relatively tranquil, yet buzzing café experience, especially on Sundays after church, the Village Square branch has a pleasant setting and the added bonus of being adjoined to the impressive Woolworths Emporium.
The Tyger Valley branch is a personal favourite (they even managed to keep my morning sickness at bay during early pregnancy) but it can be quite loud and busy at times, if that bothers you.

(There is also a Willowbridge branch in the area but, over several years, we’ve never had a good experience there yet. So, personally, I just can’t recommend them. That’s just my honest take.)
If you have a sweet tooth, do try their milkshakes or desserts; we can never go wrong with one of their pure milkshakes or slices of cake.
Best for:
Cosy dates, catch-ups and family-friendly, casual meals.

Oatlands Cafe

Cuisine:
Relaxed, country-style South African fare. Think delicious breakfasts, lunches and sweet treats. Highlights include Boere Meisie/Seun pizzas, Biscoff cheesecake and some great coffee!

Location:
Oatlands Farm, Visserhok Road, Durbanville, Northern Suburbs
Best for:
Everyone, really but especially avid cyclists as its on the popular local MTB trail route. It’s also a winner for families with children, as it has the most incredible outdoor play area and some tasty kiddies’ food and drinks to boot.

Why go:
Because they have the most gorgeous farm setting with relaxed, yet elegant porch or indoor seating, as well as some restricted, takeaway tables near the play area.
The food is also excellent and well-priced and they have a nice, varied menu with something for everyone.

For families, they have the most wonderful play area complete with swings, a safe jungle gym, sand pit and little play row boat.
I especially love that they also double as an intimate events venue for special occasions.
Service is on the relaxed side so don’t expect instant but there isn’t a need to rush here. Enjoy the scenery, soak up the farm atmosphere and let the little ones be little.

Treat Coffee Roasters

Cuisine:
Cafe beverages and a mix of delicious light meals, from Portuguese-style toasties and pastries to fresh carrot cake and famous banana bread.
Location:
They have two branches in the Northern Suburbs (as well as one at Canal Walk now): the main cafe is at Shop 5, Spiro’s Centre, Corner of Wellington and Main Road. While their popup location is a coffee pod situated at 1B Vierlanden Road, Durbanville.
Best for:
Casual bites, quick stops on your school or exercise runs (their pod is especially ideal for this and is naturally popular among parents and cyclists both) and, if you enjoy trying new things, some Portuguese-style eats.
Why go:

Because their cafe is cosy, beautifully set out and it has the friendliest barista in town. And honestly, it’s just an all-round lovely find in the heart of busy Durbanville.
Their flagship cafe also serves SuperBock beer on tap and THOR Vintners wine by the glass. So it offers a unique experience compared to your more one-dimensional coffee shops.

It’s also a great remote working location as they kindly offer unlimited WiFi and you can use the counter plug points.
The coffee pod is equally lovely but for different reasons. It’s a handy, yet cheerful pop of colour in an otherwise sleepy part of Durbanville.
It’s perfect as a quick stop as you run errands, catch up with friends (they have nice outdoor picnic tables near some shade) or get your daily steps/cycle in.
Service is always friendly at both locations and they have good baked goods and tasty looking sandwiches and wraps. We still need to try their food more though.

De Vrije Burger Bellville

Cuisine:
Quality burger fare. Think things like: real (gourmet) burgers, real tjips and of course, some delicious De Vrije Roomys (ice cream), which comes free with every burger!
Location:
Welgemoed Forum, 24 Kommissaris Street, Welgemoed, Bellville.
Best for:
A casual, yet scenic lunch in the Northern Suburbs. It’s a relaxed, family-friendly spot ideal for catch-ups, casual meetings over lunch or family meals.

Why go:
Bertus Basson’s much loved De Vrije Burger has finally made its way to Bellville, bringing that signature burger and “tjips” flair to the Northern Suburbs. And, in the process, filling a distinct burger restaurant gap here.
They also have the OG Stellenbosch branch, which has been a firm, local favourite for some years now, and their newer Sea Point branch! (They no longer operate at Time Out Market but had a great run there too.)
Bringing DV Burgers to Bellville
As with all things Chef Bertus, this restaurant needs no introduction. The man is a legend in the local culinary scene and for good reason. What I love most about his food (I’ve now visited three of his restaurant offerings in the past four years) is how Chef Bertus really strives to recreate or offer good old South African fare, often with a family-friendly setup or at more affordable prices.

But what makes this burger joint so special is, of course, the food. From the premium, 100% free range-reared beef patties to the delicious tjips (I am ruined for life now) to his famous homemade sesame, buttery burger buns to the complimentary, yet divine soft serve ice-cream you receive with every burger order – it’s safe to say that De Vrije Burger Bellville is one of the most authentic, yet tasty restaurant offerings around.
It doesn’t hurt that this small, yet tastefully decorated blue-and-white-themed burger spot also enjoys magnificent views over Welgemoed Forum, to the distant Stellenbosch mountain range.

The service here is, in true Bertus Basson style, friendly, efficient and professional to a fault. The staff just seem to really enjoy their work and the restaurant is spotless. Beyond that, the fact you get a buzzer with your order makes things more streamlined and efficient for both sit-down or takeaway orders.
I loved my classic De Vrije Burger with peri-peri tjips and a complimentary, sprinkle-strewn ice-cream but I can’t wait to work my way through the rest of the menu.

At the shop, they also have a DB Wine Wall, beer on tap and other drinks, as well as some sauces and other goodies to purchase.

The Bakehouse Family

Cuisine:
Incredible baked goods, wood-fired pizzas, local ice-cream and a range of lovely drinks, including decadent milkshakes and good coffee.
They also serve lovely breakfasts, toasties and other eats.

Location:
The Bakehouse Family, Glengarry Shopping Centre, De Bron, Brackenfell, Northern Suburbs
Best for:
Cosy dates; casual, yet stylish meetups with friends; remote work meetings; and of course, relaxed meals with your loved ones.

If you like gluten-free or more specialised/artisanal baked goods, they will definitely hit the mark there too!
Why go:
Because service is good, the cafe is absolutely beautiful, they have a wide range of freshly baked and frozen goods in-store and, above all, everything tastes as amazing as it looks or sounds.

It’s not often a place knocks my figurative socks off but The Bakehouse Family definitely did on our first (and not our last) visit. Like their slogan implies, everything here really is baked with love and it shows!
It was such a pleasant cafe experience and their pastries, pizza and milkshakes are some of the best we’ve had.

What’s The Scoop?

Cuisine:
Decadent, freshly made Belgian waffles (both sweet and savoury options available), beverages, ice-cream cakes, shakes and sundaes and gourmet ice-cream flavours that change frequently, with some core favourites.
Location:
Shop 2, Langeberg Ridge Centre, 43 Ridge Road, Langeberg Ridge, Northern Suburbs.
Best for:
Indulgent afternoon treats, family-friendly dessert dates or anyone searching for excellent gluten-free, vegan- or banting-friendly dessert options.

Why go:

If you are looking for a true dessert gem in the Northern Suburbs, What’s The Scoop? definitely hits the sweet spot.
I first heard about this spot a few years ago so, while it isn’t a new spot in the Northern Suburbs per se – it is still lesser known to some people.
And personally, we only really tried it once we lived just up the road for a time. (It was a life-saver during my pregnancy as ice-cream was one of the few things I could actually eat without my body protesting it.)
This cafe feels like a proper old-school ice-cream parlour, with friendly, warm owners and staff and offers a cosy, welcoming space with lovely, relaxed indoor- and outdoor-seating for young and old to enjoy.

From a dietary perspective, they are pretty inclusive with their menu, as they offer high-quality gluten-free and banting-friendly waffles that taste very good!
We love their traditional waffles best and have tried both their savoury and sweet options, along with a host of exciting ice-cream flavours.
We have even tried their range of frozen, pre-made waffles and take-home ice-cream tubs, which are well-priced and truly high quality.

They also a range of beverages, affogatos, Wow sundaes and ice-cream cakes (available for order).
The atmosphere at What’s The Scoop? is wonderfully relaxed. It’s a great place to bring the whole family for a sweet weekend treat.
Whether you are in the mood for a more classic waffle or are feeling more adventurous with a new ice-cream flavour or savoury topping, the portions are generous and the flavours are spot on every time.

Their milkshakes are also quite legendary (and massive!), so be sure to go with a sweet tooth or healthy appetite!

Prima Burgers Durbanville

Cuisine:
Premium smash burgers served as 100% veld-reared beef patties on handmade brioche buns, with accompanying American cheddar, tallow wedges, house-crafted sauces and cold beverages to finish them off nicely.
Location:
Unit 2, 43 Main Road, Durbanville.
Best for:
Relaxed dinner treats, fast and efficient takeaway orders (they are open till 21:00 pm daily, which helps) or simply, an oddly nostalgic, yet delicious smash burger experience!
Why go:
Prima Burgers is a wonderful addition to the local Durbanville food scene. They offer a menu that feels both familiar and excitingly fresh.
Their approach is simple, yet refined: do things properly through slow craft, with honest produce and fare at premium-level quality, yet affordable prices.
In addition to this new Durbanville branch, they have a branch in both Kloof Street, Cape Town and George.
Premium by Nature: Prima Burgers

It’s the kind of place that reminds you why a classic burger-and-chips combo is such a winner.
But it’s also very aesthetically appealing, with its moody, old-fashioned paintings, counter seating and bold navy decor undertones.
The shop is small, yet adequately sized for an intimate sit-down meal. (As a bonus, they are right next door to Plato Durbanville, so you can grab your coffee and pastries, then get supper! 🙂 )

We were impressed by their quality beef smash burgers, although the tallow wedges are a more acquired, pretty sharp taste.
They are not wedges I would personally be adventurous enough for again. (But, to be fair, pregnancy ruined my taste buds so it could just be me!)

What really impressed us though is the attention to deal and elegance of their packaging, which makes takeaway meals feel luxurious rather than like cheap seconds in comparison to the more curated sit-down dining experiences restaurants usually focus on.
There is a real sense of pride in the food here, too – and it shows in every bite.

Whether you prefer a classic cheesy smash burger or something a bit more spicy like I did (opt for the Prima Veldfire with jalapeños, if so!), there is something on the menu for every burger lover!
Lastly, the staff are friendly, professional and fast with their service, rounding off a good meal experience.
If you are looking for a new local burger spot that consistently delivers on affordable, yet refined burgers and really excels at takeaway service, Prima Burgers is definitely the place for you!

Turn ‘n Tender Majik Forest

Although Turn ‘n Tender Majik Forest first opened in August 2022 (and I originally sampled it a month or two later), I hadn’t had a full experience of the eatery until winter 2026 so, while it isn’t a new restaurant, it’s new(er) to me in a sense.
And it certainly deserves a place on this list because we had one of our best family/date night meals here.
Cuisine:
More than Just Your Standard Steakhouse Menu
Obviously, they specialise in meat cooked to perfection, from sirloin steaks to South African favourites (including chicken- or beef-curry and oxtail dishes).
But they also offer a great selection of starters, combos, seafood, burgers, salads and vegetarian meals, as well as a lovely array of tempting desserts, cocktails and mocktails and other (hot and cold) beverages.

For example, they made me one of the best Chocolate Mousse desserts I have had anywhere.
My bacon and cheese burger was also great and cooked to perfection. While my partner proclaimed his ribs as some of the best he’s had in a long time. (Usually he leaves disappointed by the ribs at most eateries.) So they definitely aren’t one dimensional at all.
Location:
Shop 23, Majik Forest Shopping Center, 6 Koelenhof Street, Van Riebeeckshof, Cape Town
Best for:
A family meal with older kids or teens (they aren’t marketed as child-friendly per se but our toddler was warmly welcomed and there are other children who pop in for family meals; they even have a baby chair on hand) , social dining, intimate dinner celebrations with friends, colleagues or loved ones, weekend steak-outs (see what I did there?) and of course, classy, no-pressure dates.

They run some excellent specials, including some unmissable all-day set menu or lunch deals, so keep an eye on their socials for those!
Why go:
Not only does this fine steakhouse, which offer beautiful interior spaces and pet-friendly outdoor deck space overlooking the Majik Forest Shopping Centre parking area (great for people watching) but they thrive on efficient, quick service (complemented by their professional, warm staff), elegant dining (without the pomp and ceremony) and, above all, an excellent, varied menu that is far superior to your run-of-the-mill steakhouse menu.

Good to know:
The original Turn ‘n Tender Steakhouse opened in 1977. Since then, they have offered quality meats, prepared in their famously exclusive central kitchens, paired with hand-picked wines from South Africa’s finest estates.

They have several branches across South Africa (mainly in Gauteng) but the Majik Forest branch is the only one in Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs.

LuckyLu Gelato & Bakery

This humble, yet booming Stellenberg-based bakery may just be one of the best stores to arrive in the Northern Suburbs.
I love supporting local and spots like this just make it a joy to do. Service is outstanding, as it is both professional and personal, even at their busiest, and while the shop is small, it has a warmth and “serious baker” vibe to it that I love.
It doesn’t hurt that they sell some cute LuckyLu merch too – including their adorable bread bags and branded travel cups.

When I jokingly commented to owner, Dimo Simatos, that he needs to expand due to the popularity of the place, he said he actually prefers to keep things as they are – it’s controlled and refined and, having visited and seen first-hand how slick and sleek everything is here, I can understand that.
So yes, it is geared more as a pop-in and collect or order for takeaway spot but there is some outdoor seating if you wish to hang around a bit.

Cuisine:
This bakery offers the very best in hot- and cold-beverages, freshly baked goods and sweet treats, like their sinfully good gelato options (from hazelnut praline to caramello).
And, as it’s owned and overseen by a Greek specialist pastry chef, you know everything from the frappe coffees to the spanakopita-inspired croissants are going to be amazing.
Location:
LuckyLu Bakery & Gelato, Bergsig Garden Village, 70 Springfontein Street, Durbanville, Cape Town
Best for:
Everything from fresh, premium coffee (made with double shot espresso, premium grade specialty, locally roasted Arabica beans) to incredible gelato (made using fresh milk; churned daily; and with no artificial flavourants or colourants) and of course, quality bakes, like cinnamon rolls, all-butter classic croissants, tiramisu buns (I mean, come on), four-seed sourdough and more.

They also have hot chocolate, milkshakes (selected from their available gelato flavours) and red cappuccino if you prefer to skip the caffeine fix. (I personally won’t because their coffee drinks are amazing – but you do you, boo. 🙂 )
Why go:
Because this small, Greek-owned bakery and high quality brand is built on freshness, skill and quality.
Everything here is made daily, on-site and in small batches, ensuring their signature treats (like the Spanakopita Double Baked Croissant, for example) and favourites are as great as they look. And trust me, everything on display looks amazing and sorely tempting!
A Full Circle Blog Moment
After I found them on Instagram a while back, I had eagerly waited for LuckyLu Gelato & Bakery to open.
Life got in the way for some time – but once we finally made it to the bakery, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had seen the owner before. I even commented to my partner, “He’s familiar to me. I must have heard of or written about him before.” And sure, enough – I had.
You see, in 2017, I was fortunate enough to correspond with and meet Chef Dimo Simatos, who was the then-head chocalatier at Lindt Cape Town and who remains one of SA’s finest pastry chefs.
We had a wonderful cake baking session with him back then – and he is still one of the nicest people I’ve encountered in the food and hospitality industry (trust me, those few gems stand out).

A quick Google/blog search back home helped me piece it together.
I am so glad that I can support Mr Simatos, a highly qualified, yet incredibly humble specialist pastry chef, once more. This time through his own insanely popular neighbourhood bakery.
It’s rare that I get these kinds of full circle moments through my blog. But now, having contentedly watched my own little chaos goblin devour a croissant and babyccino made by Chef Dimo, it feels like the most special kind. 🙂
Good to Know:
You can also pre-order baked goods from LuckyLu for all your celebrations, birthdays and special occasions.
However, all orders must be placed in-store (not telephonically or via email), as they currently only offer in-store card payments.

Author’s Note:
This post will keep on growing. So, if you reside in the Northern Suburbs, keep checking back! 🙂
My Notable Mentions:

-
Vida e Caffe – Tyger Valley | Cape Gate (Both friendly, lovely branches with good service, tasty food and great drinks. By this time, you could probably try the Biscoff latte and the Jalapeno-cheese toasties and tell them I sent you because I order that combo so often. :D)
-
Coffee Cartel (An interesting, small café in central Durbanville.)
-
Tollie’s Pub and Grill (Great local butchery at Cobble Walk Shopping Centre. They have decently priced basic coffee but they make really delicious boerewors rolls!)

-
Mondvol Cookies (Mondvol often has pop-ups across Cape Town and they’ve got a road trip underway for 2026. But in 2025 they opened a handy Warehouse Front Shop in Bonnie Brae. The shop is small but the perfect stop for your Mondvol cookie fix. Personally, we love their cookies – like the rest of SA, really! Andriette is a cookie queen and another inspirational lady out there empowering her fellow women!)
-
Chocolat Bistro (An oldie but a goldie and the loveliest, vintage-style place, where I was blessed to have my baby shower thrown.)

-
Ben’s Bubble Tea (They have a small pop-up stand we like at Cape Gate. If you like bubble tea, try them!)
-
Bagel & Fox (For delicious takeaway bagels, they are hard to beat. They even have a handy drive-through!)
-
Doppio Zero Tyger Valley (We love this branch. It’s elegant, service friendly and they serve great food and drinks. As a bonus, they are exceptionally lovely to our toddler!)
-
Mex-Si-Can (Great for burger takeaway orders or delicious sit-down drinks. They aren’t quite Mexican fare but they are loosely inspired by it so it’s worth a try. I’ve heard good things about their food, although we’ve only tried the burgers so far. They are the sister restaurant to Mezza Luna, so they are well-run and just opposite them at Cobble Walk.)
