With a range of world-class wine farms and restaurants, wine pairings that impress from the first sip and a host of fun outdoor and indoor experiences too (everything from historic glass museums to lavish family picnics), there is plenty to see and do in Stellenbosch Wine Region.
Since 2024, one of the best additions to the Stellenbosch Wine Routes is the thrilling Stellenbosch Wine Tractor. This amazing hop on, hop off experience is highly affordable and provides great value for your money. While also offering locals and international guests a chance to explore some gems in the Stellenbosch Wine Region.
Most of all, though, the wine tractor provides a wonderful, family-friendly outing.
Run by Andrew and his incredible team of expert wine tractor drivers and guides, this experience is now an unmissable part of the Stellenbosch Wine Routes.
In this post, I share how best to savour the stunning Stellenbosch Wine Tractor, as well as some personal highlights from our trip!
Need to Know Info
Hop-on, Hop-off at the Root44 Market
This hop-on, hop-off wine tasting experience, which allows travellers and wine lovers alike to explore ten different wine farms in the Golden Triangle, one of South Africa’s most famous and well-loved wine regions, is based near the Root44 Market. (If you drive in, they are down to your right.)
For those travelling from the city, which is some 35 minutes away, there is a daily shuttle, which departs from City Sightseeing’s Long Street office.
The wine tractor’s lovely ticket office is a welcoming spot to purchase/organise tickets, plan your wine route or simply enjoy your complimentary glass of wine from.
They have excellent, shaded wicker porch- and relaxed outdoor-seating. Here, they also sell some snacks and refreshments, tractor-themed goodies and toys and other keepsakes.
Please just note that you should arrive 30 minutes before your trip starts for check-in. (To streamline the process, you can also check-in online in advance.)
Also, if you book during your birthday month, you can redeem a complimentary wine tractor ticket! Just remember to bring your SA ID along, as this birthday ticket is only redeemable by South African citizens.
As a bonus, you can also pre-order some special celebratory cupcakes. (For birthdays, just keep in mind it’s a minimum order of six cupcakes.)
The wine tractor offers these in partnership with a top local baker, Spoon Bakery.
Wine Tractor Rules
While the wine tractor experience naturally targets wine-loving adults, it remains wonderfully family-friendly. In fact, they have some strict rules in place to ensure the experience remains clean and child-friendly.
For starters, there is no eating or drinking permitted aboard the wine tractor itself.
If you purchase wine at the estates, please hand it over to your guides for safekeeping till the end of your tour.
There is also no smoking of cigarettes or vaping allowed on the tractor. (It’s great to see this rule enforced as these days, to many people, vaping doesn’t seem to count as smoking…)
Finally, no one is allowed to stand during the tractor ride. So please remain seated at all times while the tractor is in motion.
These are the main rules and they are important to abide by so everyone can have a fun, safe time!
For your comfort and safety, please wear closed shoes and comfortable clothes and pack a light warm top/jacket.
Also, wear sun hats and generous sunscreen because, while the wine tractor is well-sheltered, seating is still exposed to the sun at times. On a weather-related note, all wine tractor trips remain strictly weather-dependent.
Choosing Your Wine Tractor Route
It can be hard choosing which wine farms to visit with the wine tractor. Thankfully, the expert wine tractor guides are there to provide a helpful recommendation or two. 🙂 It’s a good idea to keep an open mind and (literally) just enjoy the ride.
For our trip, our guide helped us decide on our wine farms for the day.
Once your tour starts, you can either head to your first wine farm of the day or you can do a wine tasting at the nearby Root44 Wine Emporium. (Before or after your trip, why not also check out the buzzing Root44 Market, which is open thrice weekly from Saturday – Monday? (The market is closed on public holidays and from Tuesday-Friday.))
Generally, you are given about 65 to 75 minutes at each estate you choose to visit.
This means, even with a full day’s wine hopping, you may only cover four, maybe five, wine farms,, although you can visit up to eight.
We visited four and it was the perfect number without making our experience feel too rushed or busy.

It’s important to add that the availability of certain farms may change due to operational constraints.
Also, some estates are closed on Sundays. (For example, on the Sunday we visited, Grangehurst was closed.)
In light of this, the wine tractor schedule gets adjusted daily based on the available farms and operating tractors.
The first tractor leaves at 09:30 am and the last tractor returns at 18:35 pm.
Mums’ Day Out in the Stellenbosch Winelands
Our trip was a proper mums’ day out; we left the kids with the dads and enjoyed an unhurried, leisurely day out in the winelands.
Although we also saw couples, friends and families having a blast on the wine tractor too, so the experience truly does cater to everyone!
Next time, we’ll visit the wine tractor for a child-friendly experience and try some of the other offered wine farms! 🙂
Wine Tractor Stops: Klein Alto, Peter Falke Wines, Webersburg and Longridge
Our fun trip started with a quick pick-up at Audacia Wines (a fascinating boutique wine farm that offers rooibos-infused wines), before we proceeded to Klein Alto.
Alto is under renovations until possibly 2027 so in the meantime, Klein Alto, which offers a gorgeous restaurant and atrium events space, doubles as the wine stop.
Once the main estate is up and running again, our waiter assured us that Klein Alto will continue to function as a restaurant and intimate events venue.
After a quick light meal and coffee, as well as a complimentary rose wine at Klein Alto, we headed onto the stylish Peter Falke Wines.
Our stop here was very brief but we still had a blast exploring the estate.
This is one of the truly child-friendly stops on the route. Peter Falke estate has impressive grounds, giant bean bags for lounging in the gardens, a restaurant and a great playground for kids to enjoy.
After Peter Falke Wines, we went to Webersburg, a beautiful wine estate and wedding venue.
Here, overlooking the Stellenbosch mountains and tranquil dam, we enjoyed a scenic pizza luncheon.
Although I definitely need to revisit the estate for a family picnic.
Again, this estate is very child-friendly in its own right. Although, for me personally, the restaurant isn’t the most child-friendly option as it’s quite upmarket.
Once we were done with our lunch, it was time to head to our last stop of the day: the hugely scenic and highly child-friendly Longridge.
This intimate, yet incredible estate is an organic wine producer so it tempted us into trying four of excellent wines.
Our favourite was The Emily (which is inspired by Emily Hobhouse), although all of their organic wines are sublime.
What’s Included in Your Wine Tractor Ticket
Wine Tractor Tour Inclusions and Exclusions:
Each standard hop-on, hop-off wine tractor ticket includes the following:
– A welcome taster on arrival at the wine tractor’s ticket office.
– Transportation from the ticket office to each of the wine estates on your route.
Sometimes, you may even receive a complimentary wine tasting at an estate. For example, we enjoyed a complimentary glass of rose wine at Klein Alto, which was a lovely touch.
Each standard hop-on, hop-off wine tractor ticket excludes the following:
Wine tastings, lunches and other estate activities are excluded from your ticket.
However, tastings and meals can be purchased and paid for separately at the estates during the tour.
You generally don’t need to pre-book for these offerings, as the estates wonderfully accommodate wine tractor guests.
Most wine tastings are about R100 per wine tractor guest.
How It Rated
My friend and I were guests of the Stellenbosch Wine Tractor experience so our tractor tickets were hosted. (I was originally invited in 2024 when they first started up but life and motherhood happened – and I could only join two years on.)
However, we paid in full for all meals, tastings and extras at the estates and ensured we still each left a tip for the guides.
On that note, I must state that tipping is greatly appreciated. Tips are shared among the team of drivers and guides. They not only escort you to your destinations but they usually walk to meet you too and make sure that everyone is safe and accounted for on the return trips.
The tractor drivers and guides work quite long hours but they share the most informative facts and bring a lot of personality and fun to the trips, so please leave a tip for them!
What impressed us most is how friendly, professional and knowledgeable every member of the wine tractor team is.
Another thing we noticed is how well the estates work together with the wine tractor team. It’s admirable to see how organised and curated the experience is for wine tractor guests.
In Closing
At the time of writing, tickets cost R330 per adult and R180 per child for kids 17 and younger and they really are so worthwhile.
It’s honestly one of the best tour experiences I have enjoyed in the Western Cape and I have tried both City Sightseeing’s wine tours and the Franschhoek Wine Tram.
