Best Movies and Series to Watch When You Can’t Travel

Sep 24, 2020Dec 10, 2020 Tamlyn Ryan

It has been said that a reader lives many different lives… As a bookworm, I can certainly attest to this. Yet, as much as books can transport us to new worlds, imaginary planets and even different countries – so too can movies (and series). In this post, I share the best movies (and series) to watch when you can’t travel… […]

I recently shared a poll asking if my followers wa I recently shared a poll asking if my followers wanted to know how they, as consumers, can still support wine farms during extended Level 3's alcohol ban. ❎
.
The majority who voted said yes - and while I think we all know the safest place to be right now is still home, if you go out - consider supporting a wine farm.
.
I understand the seriousness of corona; I personally know people who have fought or died from it so I don't take it lightly. At all. πŸ˜”
.
But I also know the wine (and restaurant) industry is on its knees.πŸ’”
.
So the next wine farm I am sharing is: De Grendel, situated in my beloved Durbanville Wine Valley.
.
Since my visit in 2019, De Grendel has been one of my favourite wine farms in the Western Cape for so many reasons.
.
This award-winning estate has been especially inventive about their product offerings and exceptional to its staff during the alcohol bans. πŸ‘
.
In this latest ban, De Grendel has just launched some exciting new tapas. These tasty gourmet tapas are the brainchild of Chef Ian Bergh and the restaurant team.
.
With a varied menu, the gourmet tapas are available Wednesday to Saturday, 11:00 - 18:00 and on Sundays from 11:00 to 15:00.
.
Tapas can be enjoyed in the Tasting Room, on the lawns or on the Tasting stoep/porch, allowing you to soak up the distant views of Table Mountain that the estate enjoys. 🀩
.
Pricing is R270 per person for 5 tapas and a mocktail. Booking is essential. Please contact De Grendel directly to book.
.
Additionally, De Grendel is also offering scenic farm tours. See wildlife on the farm and learn more about the estate's rich history and its impressive wines. Bookings are essential, please contact De Grendel directly to book. πŸŒ„
.
De Grendel wines can still be ordered on the online store - for delivery later once the ban lifts.
.
Also, international wine lovers can find a list of international agents/suppliers up on De Grendel's website.
.
These are just some of the ways you can support De Grendel through the ban.
.
Whether you stay home or go out, please be responsible and vigilant at all times. πŸ˜·πŸ™
.
Wear a mask. Sanitise often. Social distance. And above all, stay home if you feel unwell. 🏘️
For the first time in weeks, I ventured out the ho For the first time in weeks, I ventured out the house to restore a bit of sanity to my world and found an incredible, safe experience in Jamestown Flower Farm's pick-your-own flower experience. πŸŒΌπŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ
.
With COVID-19 and the current cases, I am doing everything I can to stay put at home. But sometimes, even with all the fear and sorrow doing the rounds, you just need to get outdoors again. πŸ˜”
.
Personally, I am especially sceptical and paranoid about most activities in public so I won't do something unless I feel it is safe and responsible (as far as can be in these times).
.
But with a safe, socially distanced flower farm in Stellenbosch, I had my answer. πŸ‘
.
Newly opened, Jamestown Flower Farm exceeded all my hopeful expectations. The entire experience - from the safety protocols in place to the way everyone visiting diligently kept their masks on to the incredible, warm staff - was amazing. πŸ˜·πŸ™
.
Not only did I have a blast picking my own flowers (R60 for a ticket; this includes 20 stems, otherwise it is R3 per stem thereafter) - but it was just what I needed to lift my spirits a bit and get some vitamin D. β˜€οΈ Better still, I was barely around anyone else the entire morning as the farm offers enough space for you to hunt for flowers in peace and to a degree, safety.
.
Thank you to @jamestownflowerfarm for this special experience you are safely offering to the public.πŸ’
.
Also, I just finished writing up a photo essay on today's outing. You can find this linked in my bio if you are keen to learn more about this fun, safe pick-your-own offering. ☺️🌺🏡️🌾
I recently shared a poll asking if my followers wa I recently shared a poll asking if my followers wanted to know how they, as consumers, can still support wine farms during extended Level 3's alcohol ban. ❎

But I also know the wine (and restaurant) industry is on its knees.πŸ’”
.
So, I'm going to start sharing a wine farm each day (where possible) - highlighting how you can support them. 🍷
.
And if you wish to stay home - then you can still order online for delivery once the alcohol ban lifts. πŸ‘ (Order for a friend if you are not a wine lover yourself.)
.
First up I am sharing: Groot Constantia, found in the beautiful Constantia Winelands.
.
I first visited this historic estate a few years ago, as part of City Sightseeing's Cape Wine Bus tour.🚌
.
Here are ways to support Groot Constantia (within your personal comfort and safety levels):
.
During extended Level 3, online orders can still be placed for delivery once the ban lifts. Orders qualify for free delivery when you spend R1000 or more. 🚚 In addition to the estate's individual bottles, you can order mixed case(s) of Groot Constantia wine.
.
Choose between the following mixed case options: mixed whites; mixed reds; mixed red blends; mixed red and white case. Visit their website for details:Β grootconstantia.co.zaΒ
.
Jonkershuis restaurant is open, Monday - Saturday, 08:00 am - 19:00 pm and on Sundays from 08:00 am - 17:00 pm. Reservations can be made at:Β (021) 794 6255 orΒ info@jhuis.co.za.
.
Simon's Restaurant is also open.Β They recently launched a new breakfast menu, available daily between 09:00 am - 11:30 am.
To make a reservation at Simon's, contact:Β (021) 794 1143 orΒ info@simons.co.za.
.
GuestsΒ are welcome to walk about the estate and to apparently visit the museum.
.
Whether you stay home or go out, please be responsible and vigilant at all times. πŸ˜·πŸ™
.
Wear a mask. Sanitise often. Social distance. And above all, stay home if you feel unwell. 🏘️
Under Level 3, with so many new cases, strict call Under Level 3, with so many new cases, strict calls to avoid public spaces and public closures to many of our natural spots (like beaches), I haven't really wanted to encourage travel too much because people are losing or fighting for their lives every minute of every day - and that is bigger than all of us. πŸ˜”πŸ’”
.
At the same time, I realised there might be a need for safe travel that allows people to get out the house, if needed.
.
One that even provides the option for them to do so safely from their car. πŸš™ Without endangering themselves or others.
.
So, in my latest post (linked in my bio), I have put together some quirky but fun Western Cape roadside attractions to road trip and see across our beautiful province! πŸ˜‰
.
Although some of the places offer facilities or activities on-site (which may be affected by COVID-19 rules and regulations and opening times) - each place on this list can be enjoyed from your car - you literally don't even have to get out! 🚘
.
So if cabin fever is driving you a little up the wall but you don't want to put yourself or others at risk, check out these safe travel-friendly roadside attractions across the Cape. πŸ™‚
.
I would also like to extend a special word of thanks to all the Instagrammers who kindly let me use their snaps for places I didn't have photos of. I am so grateful for your contributions. πŸ™‚ (These have been credited accordingly - otherwise, all other photos not credited in the post are my own.) πŸ“Έ
.
As ever, please wear a mask in public, sanitise frequently and social distance whenever you step outside your home. 🏘️
.
And please, please stay home and isolate if you feel unwell in any way. 😷
Question for my followers: So in the past month or Question for my followers: So in the past month or two, as some of you may have seen - I have been trying to share interesting places (restaurants, bakeries, wine farms, accommodation gems) - and giveaways I stumble across in my feed to my Insta stories. πŸ‘©β€πŸ³πŸžοΈπŸ₯žπŸ”
.
Usually, even if I can't post anything else that day, I try share a few of these. It takes quite a bit of scrolling and checking from my side - but my question for you is: is it actually helpful or is it just spammy? ☺️
.
I will be honest and admit that yes, I have featured many of the places I reshare (and I love them) - but some are entirely new ones that catch my eye so there is no intended bias. I have started sharing spots across SA and not just the Western Cape so that it is helpful to all. πŸ˜‰
.
If these Insta story reshares helpful, would you like more info in the re-share (Example: XYZ is running an amazing giveaway!' or 'There is an exciting new bakery in Durbanville doing in-store and home deliveries') so you have more context of what each share is about? πŸ˜οΈπŸŒ…
.
Then you can pick and choose which to click through to for more info?
.
And if you are a business, industry professional/supplier, restaurant or accommodation spot, would you like to be tagged when I reshare one of your posts or not? πŸ€”
.
Please comment below or DM to let me know. πŸ™‚
.
I don't want this exercise to be spammy or irritating to anyone. I am simply trying to help promote places and also provide my followers with inspiration or things they might otherwise not know about or see in their feeds. 🌼

Right now, the second safest place (after staying home) is probably out in the wilderness, hiking in our beautiful Cape nature, and I think most of us could really use the peace, grounding and all-round healthy exercise that hiking brings.β˜ΊοΈπŸ§—

These hikes are ranked according to my personal preference but each bears a fairly accurate difficulty rating - and highlights whether or not it is safe for families to try undertake. πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘¦β€πŸ‘¦πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦

As ever, hiking in nature brings its own risks - so I have included my best hiking tips to help you safely prepare for any adventure. Whatever hike you do, always be careful and keep your wits about you. πŸ₯Ύ

Whatever this new year has in store, may you hold fast to love, hope and kindness. 🍾
.
Please stay safe, everyone. ❣️
As 2020 draws to a close, I know there is a lot of As 2020 draws to a close, I know there is a lot of fear, sadness and pain going around. And while it's hard to take stock of a year that has rocked humanity to its core - I still believe in practicing gratitude. Even (or perhaps more so?) in the worst of times. ❣️
.
Personally and professionally, I have so much to be grateful for. And even in a year where travel has essentially been the last thing on my mind, I have been blessed in that sense (through my blog) too.
.
Firstly, to the brands and PR reps who collaborated with me in 2020 in any way, whether great or small, thank you for your support and kindness. I look forward to hopefully continuing these type of collabs in the future.πŸ™‚πŸ₯‚
.
To the lovely guest bloggers who featured on my blog this year, either as contributors or as interviewees on my Guests' Corner, thank you for finding a place on my blog. I loved connecting with each of you and I am grateful for the new blogging friendships made this year. πŸ€—
.
To my readers and followers, fellow bloggers/influencers, friends and loved ones, thank you for giving me your time, online support and consideration. πŸ™Œ
.
To my dearest travel partner, Alicia and all others who joined me on any adventure (even just for a meal out), thank you for being there. Thank you for helping me stay meaningfully, tangibly, connected to others in a very isolating year. πŸ™‚
.
Earlier this year, when I was struggling to cope with the weight of 2020, I started keeping an online gratitude journal.
.
Each day, I jot down things I am grateful for. Some days, the list is short - other days, I nearly run out of space.
.
But the thing that really stands out, even on the worst day, is how 'every day may not be good... but there is some good in every day'. It really is true. 🌼
.
Yes, even in 2020 where things have been broken, sad and filled with constant fears, there has been good. There has been love. There has been hope. There has been life.
.
2021 may be just as challenging - but as we close the door on 2020, I am grateful for so many things, none more than the love, support and kindness I have received from all of you. πŸŒ„
.
Thank you for being part of my blogging journey in 2020.☺️
In light of the President's address last night, So In light of the President's address last night, South Africa is back under Level 3 restrictions, as our healthcare systems are struggling in this second wave of COVID-19.
.
What does this mean?
To list a few regulations, it means:
.
Wearing a mask in public is compulsory by law for each individual. 😷 (And don't forget to social distance and sanitise frequently.)
.
On-site alcohol consumption - including at restaurants and wine farms - is not permitted, nor is alcohol consumption allowed in any public space, such as parks.
.
The curfew has been pushed forward and now runs from 21:00 pm at night to 06:00 am in the morning. In light of this, establishments, such as restaurants and shops, must close by 20:00 pm.
.
Extra restrictions also apply to hotspots, which now include the following Western Cape districts: Cape Town, the Garden Route District, West Coast District, Overberg District, Cape Winelands District and the Central Karoo District.
.
All beaches, dams, lakes, rivers and public parks and public swimming pools in hotspot areas are also closed to the public for the time being.
.
For full rules and regulations, please refer to the official provincial/national government online resources or news sites that are also re-publishing these lists.
.
Please take ownership for your own actions and protect yourself and those around you by only travelling carefully if and when you need to.
.
Like before, staying home to stay safe is still the best way to keep yourself healthy and out of harm's way but I understand that we may still need to travel during this festive season.
.
And if you do travel (or even if you choose not to), you can still find many ways to support local businesses, wine farms, restaurants and shops by visiting them to purchase goods, enjoy safe outdoor activities or order meals.
.
Whatever you decide to do under Level 3, the onus remains on each individual - now more than ever - to be responsible and careful.
.
Your actions don't just affect you during COVID-19 - and sadly, that is something we all need to keep front and centre of our minds and hearts as we wind down 2020 and head towards a new year.
Hi all, It's been a while since I checked in. As Hi all, It's been a while since I checked in. As ever, welcome to my new followers. πŸ™‚ To my existing followers, thank you for your continued support, readership and engagement. πŸ€—

Tamlyn Amber Wanderlust is a primarily travel-focused blog but you can also find some exciting guest interviews (with my fellow bloggers), fun listicle posts on the best outdoor attractions, local restaurants and of course, stunning wine farm experiences. 🍷πŸ₯ž

When I can, I genuinely love branching into food, especially as my career (and my blog too, really) started out with restaurant reviews, chef bios and more. It's like my second home in writing and I often miss putting that restaurant cap on. πŸ‘©β€πŸ³
.
When I'm not blogging, I work a full-time job in IT. It makes running a blog a bit harder when you have to do it in a part-time capacity but I wouldn't change it. I love the challenges that both my full-time job and the blog bring to my life and how they each add to my personal career growth and goals in different ways.πŸ’»

I reside in sunny Cape Town, South Africa but I am something of an expert on the Route 62 and the surrounding regions, having grown up in and explored it so widely in my youth. I still return there every holiday to enjoy the freedom and beauty of the Cape countryside. 🏞️

But, truth be told, I am also something of a expert on the Mother City and the Cape Winelands, having explored nearly every inch of it since I first moved to CT in 2014.

I look forward to sharing more of my past adventures with you in the new year, as there is still so much I haven't yet had the chance to cover on the blog. .
In a year where we have stayed inside, it seems only fitting to reflect inward too.
.
More than that though, over the past six years, my blog has received such incredible support from people, businesses, companies, brands, friends, family, colleagues and of course, my readers and followers. 🌼
.
This is my way of taking stock, saying thank you and sharing memorable travel ideas with you all.🍾

This year especially, where travel has been limited and taken a backseat to life and its sanctity, I am even more grateful for the wonderful support, kindness and encouragement I receive through the blog from my blogging peers, companies, brands and my followers too. ❣️

Some of you might remember the beautiful spring-themed cookies I posted about earlier this year - those were Carla's too! They were hands-down, the best cookies I have had the pleasure of enjoying. (And I am a cookie monster of repute so I try a lot of cookies!) πŸ˜‹πŸͺ🍰

I haven't opened these yet because we are keeping them for next week - but they look amazing. I love the variety and lovely packaging, with even a festive tag attached.πŸŽ„

This year, I have really stepped up my 'support local' game, in everything from my home decor products to tasty, homemade eats and I have had such wonderful experiences and found the most beautiful, carefully curated products around. 😌

If you do anything this festive season, please try support local businesses. It's been such a hard year for us all and right now, the little bit extra we can do or give to support local entrepreneurs, wine farms, restaurants, tourism bodies, photographers, small businesses, guesthouses and more is so meaningful. ❣️
.
So even if you cut down on your material gifts or festive expenses this year - something I think we have all had to do - please still try support local.

Most of it has been from past experiences that were stunning but which I never had enough time to focus on because there was always another new adventure to cover and share on the blog. πŸŒ„

As you will gather from my post - despite my having visited a plethora of gorgeous wine farms all across the Cape and trying several wine farm picnic experiences - picnics at De Meye has now taken first place in my books after this stunning picnic.πŸŒ„πŸ₯—πŸ¦πŸ§€

In addition to the picnics, The Table at De Meye also offers wine tastings, cheese platters and of course, their famous relaxing lunches, while the estate itself is a great, family-owned farm that produces excellent wines, organic lavender oil and also doubles as a beautiful wedding and events venue for special occasions.πŸΎπŸ‘°πŸ€΅

De Meye and The Table at De Meye are great for couples, friends/groups of friends and families with kids so everyone can enjoy a spectacular day out in the Stellenbosch Wine Route.πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘¦β€πŸ‘¦πŸ‘«πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘¦β€πŸ‘¦πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘¦

In the meantime, make a plan to try the picnics at De Meye. Picnic spots are limited to five spots, every Friday to Sunday and suitable for 2-8 people. Picnics can be booked online on their website through Dineplan, with full payment is required to confirm your booking. πŸ˜‰

They have the best safety protocols and serious social distancing in place at the estate so it is also a safe and airy experience to enjoy during COVID-19. As ever though, please travel responsibly, wear a mask, sanitise and social distance and don't travel if you feel unwell. 😷🧴
