Happy Earth Day, everyone. This year's theme is Re Happy Earth Day, everyone. This year's theme is Restore Our Earth - and it is especially fitting. ๐ŸŒฑ
.
If COVID has shown us anything, it is that life on earth is fragile. Like us, if we aren't careful, our planet can get sicker and eventually die... But we still have a chance to make a change.๐Ÿƒ
.
In the past two years, on a personal level, I have tried hard to be more earth conscious. To buy more reusable items in lieu of single-use plastics. To switch off plugs and power sockets when not in use to conserve energy. ๐Ÿ’ก
.
To eat greener and consume less meat where I can, substituting beef and pork for vegan patties or sausages that taste just as good. To shop from and support local businesses and suppliers where possible. ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ
.
Some days, it feels like my changes are so small and futile that I won't ever make an impact - but then I realise that if we all do our bit, small as it may be, change will come. And it has to. ๐Ÿ˜”
.
Our earth is sick and unlike COVID, the signs are not invisible - they are there for everyone to see. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐ŸŒ‹๐Ÿฆ
.
So, as we mark Earth Day 2021, find small but telling ways to make a change. Because we are stewards of this earth and we have done an appalling job of it so far... we have to be better. ๐Ÿž๏ธ๐ŸŒปโ˜บ๏ธ
.
We have to be better, for the sake of ourselves, our children and their future generations, for the flora and fauna who live here beside us and - above all, for this beautiful, abundant, life-giving place we call Earth. ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ
Hi all, . It feels like it's been a while since I Hi all,
.
It feels like it's been a while since I hopped on here and gave a bit of an introduction, especially as there are a few new faces following and engaging on here with me... So hi there, I'm Tamlyn, the face and content creator behind Tamlyn Amber Wanderlust.๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ‘‹
.
Tamlyn Amber Wanderlust (in case you haven't already guessed it) is a travel writing and photography blog that focuses on travel in Cape Town, the Western Cape, South Africa and beyond! ๐Ÿ˜Œ
.
What originally started as a uni project way back when I first moved to the Mother City as a Journalism student soon turned into my enduring, dedicated passion project and part-time labour of love. (Because, outside of running my blog, I also hold down a full-time day job in IT... ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿค–)
.
I am hugely passionate about sharing my favourite local restaurants, wine farms, accommodation gems and unique experiences with my readers, friends and followers.
.
This means you can find literally everything from scenic hikes and best MTB trails to delicious restaurant reviews, family-friendly adventures and even Cape Winelands wedding venue ideas up on the blog. ๐Ÿ‘ฐ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿšต I love promoting all kinds of travel: solo, couples' or family-friendly alike.
.
So, when I am not doing collaborative or spontaneous reviews or lovely guest interviews with my fellow travel-crazy writers or industry peeps, you are most likely to find fun travel- or Cape Winelands-themed listicles up on my blog. ๐Ÿ˜‹
.

Wherever my journey takes me in and around Cape Town and the Western Cape, my mission is always to share positive reviews, good experiences and local gems with my readers and followers, with the simple, yet hopeful goal of inspiring you to travel and appreciate our beautiful country, whether you are from SA or abroad. ๐Ÿ˜‰๐ŸŒ
.
I hope you enjoy being a part of my blogging - and travel - journey! ๐Ÿ™ It's great to have you along for the ride. ๐Ÿš™
The past three days in Cape Town have looked and f The past three days in Cape Town have looked and felt apocalyptic and even so far away in the Northern Suburbs, my heart breaks and feels clenched with fear and despair every time I see more fire updates or footage shared online.
.
I wish it was a bad dream. I wish it was something you could unplug, like this art display pictured. ๐Ÿ˜ญ
.
Every year, this city and indeed, the winelands, are ravaged by fires. Wildfires are always a big problem in the Cape due to our dry climate and fynbos, which lights up like tinder in a matter of moments... But to think many of these fires are unavoidable or unnecessary makes it even harder to accept. To contemplate.
.
Whatever caused this fire, it is one of the worst our city has (and hopefully ever will) see. In the midst of a pandemic, to make it even harder. ๐Ÿ˜ท
.
Fire is fearsome. All consuming. When you add buildings, homes and helpless people and animals into its path, it becomes utterly terrifying.
.
I cannot imagine what the firefighters (who have worked tirelessly since Sunday morning, faced with an inferno of unimaginable magnititude and destruction in unseasonally hot April weather), displaced students and citizens and innocent animals have gone through since Sunday. ๐Ÿ’”
.
But I do have enough experience with fires, especially having grown up on Cape farms. Even a few years ago, the valley where my family lives nearly burnt terribly and we came so, so close to evacuating our own home as the flames licked the surrounding hills.
.
And nothing prepares you for the uncertainty, the helplessnesses and the fear of something like that. So much has been lost. So much history, so much beauty.
.
Many of us are powerless to fight this fire. But we can donate, uplift and support the brave firefighters, volunteers, businesses, organisations, animal shelters, restaurants, hotels and city authorities stepping in to help. If you can, please help in any way, great or small. ๐Ÿ™
.
To those who are volunteering, fighting the blaze, assisting or supporting the displaced, caring for hurt, burnt animals or donating food, supplies and their time to help - thank you. Thank you for facing the flames - in the most literal of senses. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘
Last night, on the 50th anniversary of the Stellen Last night, on the 50th anniversary of the Stellenbosch Wine Routes, we fittingly visited Spier in Stellenbosch to enjoy some of the last moments of Spier Light Art 2021.๐ŸŽ‡
.
Although it was a tranquil evening and the estate looks pretty at night, lit by the fading twilight and scattered strings of fairy lights, I have to admit I have mixed feelings after the experience...
.
I am ordinarily a huge fan of all things Spier - but somehow, this event didn't quite live up to my expectations in the end.
.
The displays we saw were certainly interesting (if a little too artsy and unusual for my taste at times - but this is personal art preference only) - but the event felt a bit tired, perhaps because we went in the eleventh hour. I am not really sure. ๐Ÿคท
.
That said though, most of the people around us seemed to be having a really good, relaxed time - perhaps a bit too relaxed even... It's hard to admit this but I prefer to be transparent about my travels.
.
Because one thing that really did disappoint me was how people seemed to forget about COVID for the night. Most were walking around without masks and due to the crowds, it felt like social distancing went out the window a bit. ๐Ÿ˜” (Sure, I took my mask off for one or two photos when no one was near us and to eat - but that was it.)
.
I am sure this event was the exception because it was nearly over and people were trying to cling onto both the summer weather and the light art... but still - I feel like we have become a bit too complacent about COVID of late.
.
So please, whether you are inside or not, remember to keep practicing safety, sanitisation and social distancing and wear a mask, even if outdoors. ๐Ÿ˜ท
In 2021, the Stellenbosch Wine Routes celebrate 50 In 2021, the Stellenbosch Wine Routes celebrate 50 years of innovative (wine) tourism and success.๐Ÿท
.
Not only are the Stellenbosch Wine Routes - which consist of five sub-regions in Greater Simonsberg, Stellenbosch Valley, Bottelary Hills, Stellenbosch Berg and Helderberg respectively - one of the biggest sources of tourism, local beauty and revenue in South Africa - but they were also are first official wine route in SA - and in essence, the trailblazers that put our beautiful country (and province) and its amazing wines firmly on the globe wine map.๐Ÿ‘
.
While the official anniversary (read: celebration) is this Saturday, on 17 April (thanks to the founding on 17 April 1971), I have decided to share a little blog post a few days early because 2021 is the year of celebrating this incredible wine region - and one day just isn't enough to celebrate the success, vital jobs and amazing experiences our country enjoys because of it. ๐Ÿ™Œ
.
If you are keen to read about some of my favourite estates that form part of the @stellwineroute, then check out my latest blog post (link in bio). It lists all my past posts and experiences relating to these respective estates - everything from relaxed picnics and fine dining restaurants to unique wine tastings, fun adventures and prospective wedding venues too! ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘ฐ๐Ÿฅ™๐Ÿฅช

Thank you to @hazendal_estate and all involved for making this hosted picnic experience possible. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŒผ

Hazendal is a dream to visit in general but if you can try any winelands picnic, I really think theirs should be top of the list. ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿง€๐Ÿฅ–๐Ÿฅง
.
Honestly, I am a bit of a Winelands picnic fanatic and I've tried my fair share of estate picnics in recent years but this one has quietly blown most of them out the water.๐Ÿ‘
.
Everything from the relaxing, picturesque setting to the mouthwatering, generous basket spread and comfy picnic setup make this experience truly memorable.๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ˜Œ
.
Add to that a gorgeous family-orientated estate that offers everything from Russia tea ceremonies to dreamy @hazendalweddings and even newly launched, luxury homestead accommodation and you have a truly stunning destination for young and old. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ˜•๐Ÿ‘ฐ๐Ÿคต

.
I love everything about this wine estate so I was thrilled to be invited back for our second visit. ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ™Œ
.
So much has been added on since our first visit in August 2019 and it was so fun to even enjoy a guided tour of the incredible, educational and interactive kiddies' paradise, Wonderdal. ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŽจ
.
We also enjoyed the estate's amazing picnics (absolutely divine and such incredibly good value for two adults sharing!), sampled some divine bubbly and their white wine blend and explored every inch of this beautiful Stellenbosch estate.๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿพ๐Ÿท๐Ÿฅ–โ˜•๐Ÿป๐Ÿฅง

I can't wait to share a full picnic and estate review very soon - but in the meantime, feast on these snaps or check out some of my blog's previous content on this gorgeous estate. Link in bio for more info.๐Ÿ˜‰

If you haven't visited yet - you need to make a plan! Especially if you have children because Hazendal is arguably the most family-friendly estate in the Cape Winelands. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ง

Thank you so much to @hazendal_estate for hosting me for this amazing picnic experience and for the fun tour of Wonderdal too. โ˜บ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ It was sublime and one of my best review experiences to date.

And a little shout out to @chamaille.online for joining me for this beautiful autumn afternoon. ๐ŸŒป
'Travelingโ€™s not something youโ€™re good at. Itโ€™s something you do like breathing.' ~ Gayle Forman
Things have been a bit quieter on here lately... L Things have been a bit quieter on here lately... Like many people out there (I suspect), I hardly touched social media over the Easter break - and honestly, it was such a good reset. I needed to just focus on relaxing, spending time with loved ones and enjoying good food for a bit. โ˜บ๏ธ๐Ÿ™‚
.
Not that I don't love engaging with and sharing things with my followers because my gosh, I really do - but it does take time out of my days that I should probably use for some self-care and relaxing every now and then too... Maybe. Possibly. ๐Ÿ˜œ
.
March especially was a really busy and productive month in general - but also pretty stressful for me personally too, so I have been juggling a bit too much in recent weeks without any real respite. ๐Ÿ˜… (The plus side is I counter my stress with travel writing escapism so my readers and followers definitely benefit from it. ๐Ÿ˜‚)
.
But, as ever, thank you to everyone who follows, engages, comments, likes or tags me on here... ๐ŸŒท

It is always a little lift to me and tangible proof that this blogging thing gives back in a meaningful way, which is always my main goal for my travel blog. โ˜บ๏ธ

And now, after a pretty good break and quieter few weeks travel-wise, I do have some exciting adventures (hopefully) planned for the next few weeks - and I look forward to sharing more on those soon! ๐Ÿ˜

Ever since I was 14 years old, I have annually par Ever since I was 14 years old, I have annually partaken in Earth Hour.
.
For those who don't know what Earth Hour is about, it is about switching off our lights for the good of our planet and in support of nature.
.
Not for a day. Or for a few hours. No, just for 1 hour. For 60 minutes each year.๐Ÿ•ฃ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ
.
Each year, on 27 March, Earth Hour rolls around and millions of people around the world switch off their lights for the good of our planet and future generations. ๐ŸŒŒ
.
I think South Africans are more accustomed to candelit dinners, navigating in the darkness and having power cuts and outages than most - and if we can endure the inconvenience and nuisance of loadshedding, then I am sure we can add one more hour of elected 'lights off' to our plate. ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฆ
.
One hour might not change the world - but it definitely helps. And as with most things in life, every bit helps.
.
Being an eco-warrior and making a difference for the good of our planet is about the small acts and choices we make every day.
.
Choosing to eat less meat for a week or month. Switching plugs and power sockets off when not in use or you aren't home. Recycling where you can. Using eco-friendly, recycled bags, cups or coffee mugs. Participating in beach clean-ups. Using water sparingly where possible. ๐Ÿ™
.
This is how we slowly make a difference. And yes, adding Earth Hour to that list can make a huge difference.
.
So this Earth Hour (from 8.30 pm - 9.30 pm South African time), please consider switching your lights off.โ˜บ๏ธ
.
It's just for 60 minutes - but it makes all the difference to our amazing, beautiful world and we who inhabit it.
.
For more info, please head over to or follow @earthhourofficial.
Although so much is still uncertain with COVID, I Although so much is still uncertain with COVID, I am happy that smaller, more intimate weddings or carefully spaced out larger affairs have still found a way to work under certain levels, especially in recent weeks.๐Ÿ‘ฐ๐Ÿคต
.
In light of this, I recently decided to add a few more gorgeous wedding venues to my Best Wedding Venues for Travellers in the Cape Winelands post.
.
So, in addition to its existing venues, my post now also features Hazendal's array of stunning venues and BOSJES's incredible Kapel.
.
Whether you are looking to tie the knot this year or someday in the distant future, this post (link in bio) features some of the most beautiful, dreamy wedding venues you will find in the Cape Winelands. ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿฅฐ
.
I have personally visited (or vetted) each estate or venue featured on the post so they have my firm stamp of approval.
.
Note: Some of my rates are a bit outdated now because I paused updates in 2020 - but all the website links are working and there is lots of incredible, detailed wedding info for each writeup.โ˜บ๏ธ
.
So, even though life is still uncertain and everything is very much up in the air - why not dream about your happily ever after? ๐Ÿ˜
.
Because no matter what happens in this crazy world: true love will never be cancelled. Sometimes, we just have to wait a bit longer for the best things in life... ๐Ÿ’—
Not a travel post but still related in a sense: . Not a travel post but still related in a sense:
.
Today, 20 March, is the UN's International Day of Happiness and while we haven't had a lot to be happy about this past year (hard to believe it's only been a year since it feels like 10...) - mental health and well-being is more important than ever. ๐ŸŒป
.
While we are never responsible for anyone's happiness but our own, we can remember to be kind and understanding and perhaps even a little bit more reasonable than usual in these crazy times. โ˜บ๏ธ
.
To the restaurant or delivery service that's short-staffed or operating at a slower pace than usual. To the customer care provider struggling with audio/internet connection as they WFH. To the business owner battling to function with loadshedding. And to society at large (yourself included) because it is frazzled, impatient, fearful or paranoid living under the cloud of this pandemic. ๐Ÿ™
.
We are all handling this thing differently... We have all faced grief, uncertainty and loss.
.
No one's is any more significant or less important than your own. Pain is pain - and we all continue to experience things differently.
.
There is no pain or struggle that is not valid simply because it looks different to our own. ๐Ÿคท
.
So, try be kind to those around you and respect others. Whether you are comfortable going out and doing things as you must or not, remember that the person near you might not be. Wear a mask. Social distance. Sanitise. But, above all, be kind. Be human. ๐Ÿ’—
.
We are all facing daily battles that no one knows anything about. We are all stressed, anxious and fearful. For a variety of different reasons. And yes, we are all hurt and fatigued. But we are here - and many are not as fortunate.
.
So even if you can't be happy today, just be grateful - and again: be kind. To those around you - as much as to yourself... ๐Ÿ™‚๐ŸŒผ
